TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Four dogs facing long odds in crowded Georgia shelters got a lift to Tallahassee on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The nonprofit Pilots To The Rescue flew two adult dogs and two puppies into the city with help from volunteer pilots and drivers.
The plane itself has a backstory. Named Little Paw, it was a gift to the group from Tom Scholz, who started the rock band Boston and plays guitar in it, and his wife. Group founder Michael Schneider, who also serves as its lead pilot, flew the trip himself.
The two adults, Flint and Addy, had been picked up as strays and held at Polk County Animal Control in Cedartown, Ga., a rural shelter that often runs out of room. Rockdale County Animal Services in Conyers, Ga., sent along the two puppies, named Mike and Lucy.
Schneider said the route was unusual. His group more often moves animals from the South to the North, not from Georgia down into Florida, and he credited Floridians for opening their homes to rescue pets.
After landing, the adults were bound for foster care with Ewenity Farm Herding Dog Haven. Karma’s Haven Animal Rescue is handling adoption for the puppies. The dogs’ final stops include Tallahassee, Ocala and Melbourne.
Pilots To The Rescue was founded in 2015 and works with shelters and rescue groups around the country. Shelters that are short on space sometimes put dogs on euthanasia lists, and a flight to a rescue partner can give those animals a second chance at a home.
People in the Tallahassee area who want to foster or adopt can reach out to the rescue groups taking in these dogs.
