Leon County’s First Disc Golf Course Opens in Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Players in northwest Tallahassee have a new place to throw. Leon County opened its first disc golf course this week at Jackson View Park, cutting a ribbon and marking the debut with a ceremonial first throw before letting the public try the holes.

The nine-hole layout covers close to nine acres and runs a little over 2,100 feet from the first tee to the last basket. The county built it together with the Tallahassee Disc Golf Association and laid it out so beginners and experienced players can both get a fair round. It is open to the public now.

The sport already has a following in the capital city. A local disc golf page on social media counts more than 2,500 followers, and some longtime players have been driving to Tom Brown Park on the east side for a round. The Jackson View Park course gives the northwest side a closer option.

The same project reworked the park’s playground. Children ages 2 to 12 now play on safety surfacing, and the play area includes a swing that meets ADA access standards. A shade sail is coming soon. Crews also added a parking area nearer the playground, new benches and picnic tables, and stations for refilling water bottles.

County Commission Chairman Christian Caban said spending on parks gives families a place to spend time together and helps neighbors meet. District 3 Commissioner Rick Minor called the work an example of what the county and its partners can do together, while Parks and Recreation Director Amanda Heidecker credited community input for shaping the project.

Students from Canopy Oaks Elementary joined county leaders for the unveiling. Anyone who wants to play can bring a set of discs and head out during regular park hours.
