Community gathering for Memorial Day observance at a memorial site.

News Summary

This Memorial Day weekend promises to be filled with events across the Big Bend and South Georgia regions, including ceremonies and celebrations. Local organizations, such as the American Legion and VFW Post, will host observances to honor fallen heroes, while community services will face disruptions due to the ongoing state budget crisis. As festivities unfold, residents are encouraged to stay informed about the legislative challenges facing the state. Activities will culminate on Memorial Day, with ceremonies taking place at multiple locations.

Tallahassee, FL – Memorial Day weekend is set to be marked by a series of events in the Big Bend and South Georgia areas from May 23 to May 25, despite the ongoing state budget crisis. Local residents can expect ceremonies, remembrances, and celebrations as the unofficial start to summer approaches, culminating in the official observance on Memorial Day, May 26.

The American Legion Sauls-Bridges Post 13 will host its annual Memorial Day observance at Oakland Cemetery at 11 a.m. on May 26, featuring Edward W. Hood, an Air Force veteran, as the guest speaker. Additionally, Sauls-Bridges Post 13 will conduct a ceremony at the Tallahassee National Cemetery on May 24 at 1 p.m. This event will include wreath laying, speeches, a moment of silence, music, a rifle volley, and the traditional playing of Taps.

On Memorial Day, ceremonies will be held across the city. VFW Post 3308, led by Commander Frank Roycraft, will conduct a Memorial Day ceremony at their cemetery at 11 a.m., which will include patriotic music from a Drum and Fife band and wreath laying for each military branch, as well as participation from the Leon County Sheriff’s Color Guard. Leon County will also honor fallen service members with wreath placements at several local memorials on May 23, as part of the Operation Thank You Commemorative Wreath Program.

In addition to traditional observances, the IMAX theater at the Challenger Learning Center will host a special Memorial Day event featuring three film showings starting at 3 p.m. on May 26. Local residents should note that the City of Tallahassee’s administrative offices will be closed on Memorial Day; services such as solid waste collection will be delayed by one day during the week of May 25 to May 31. StarMetro will operate on a Sunday schedule with no night service on Memorial Day, while Animal Services will also close on May 26, resuming normal hours on May 27. Community centers operated by the City will also be closed on Memorial Day, reopening the following day.

While these Memorial Day events aim to bring the community together and honor those who have served, they occur amidst a broader context of legislative challenges in Florida. As of Memorial Day weekend, the state remains without a budget, as the legislative session has surpassed its deadline by over 20 days with ongoing negotiations yielding no resolution. Capitol officials have advised lawmakers against returning to Tallahassee until after the holiday weekend, indicating that budget discussions are ongoing.

Senate President Ben Albritton has acknowledged that progress has been made in budget discussions, yet he has opted not to schedule a conference in the immediate future. Disagreements remain among key officials, including House Speaker Daniel Perez, Senate President Ben Albritton, and Governor Ron DeSantis, particularly concerning tax relief proposals and budget allocations.

The deadline for Florida to adopt a budget is July 1. Should the state fail to reach an agreement by that date, it may lead to a government shutdown. Although emergency measures could potentially be implemented if a budget agreement is not reached, this scenario has never been tested in Florida history.

As the community prepares to honor fallen heroes this Memorial Day weekend, residents are reminded to also stay informed about the evolving budget situation and its potential implications for local services and operations.
