TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A 15-year-old is being prosecuted as an adult in the shooting that wounded 11 people on Perry Street after Florida A&M University’s homecoming game, the Tallahassee Police Department said Monday.
Anthony Rivers III is accused of attempted second-degree murder on 11 counts, plus one count of possession of a firearm by a delinquent. Police arrested him Sunday, Oct. 25. The charges were filed after police consulted with State Attorney Jack Campbell, whose office will try the case in adult court.
The gunfire broke out just before 8 p.m. Saturday near Perry and Manatee streets, steps from Bragg Memorial Stadium, where FAMU had just played Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Eleven people were hit by bullets. A 12th, a grandmother, hurt her ankle while running away. Six of the wounded were minors, and the youngest was 11.
Police Chief Lawrence Revell said early findings point to a fight between people who knew each other, but investigators do not believe any of the victims were the shooter’s targets. He called the arrest an important step and said the case is not closed. Detectives think there was one gunman, though more arrests remain possible.
Rivers went before a judge for the first time Monday morning and was ordered to stay locked up while his charges are pending. An arraignment is set for Nov. 16. Because he is charged as an adult, the prosecution will play out in adult court rather than in juvenile court, where records are kept confidential.
Leon County Schools said four of its students, from three different schools, were among the injured, and counselors were on hand Monday. Police credited tips and phone video from the public with helping identify a suspect, and FAMU President Marva Johnson has pledged the university’s full support to the investigation.
