TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Leon County sheriff’s deputies arrested a pair of ninth graders at two different Tallahassee, Fla., high schools this week after weapons were discovered on campus.

The first case came Thursday at Rickards High School. A school resource deputy got word that a freshman had a gun at school, after a classmate saw it and went to an administrator. The administrator located the student a short time later, looked through the teen’s backpack and pulled out a black metal airsoft pistol.

Deputies charged the 17-year-old with possession of a dangerous weapon at school and took the teen to the Juvenile Assessment Center, the sheriff’s office said in a press release issued Friday. The initial tip described a firearm; what the administrator actually recovered was the airsoft pistol, a replica-style gun.

The second arrest followed Friday at Leon High School. A teacher walking a hallway saw a knife drop out of the bottom of a student’s backpack. A school resource deputy responded, and the 14-year-old ninth grader was arrested.

That student was charged with possession of a weapon on campus and was also brought to the Juvenile Assessment Center. School discipline will be handled separately under the district conduct code, according to the sheriff’s office.

Both cases involved ninth graders, and in each one the item was found in or fell from a backpack. Neither student was identified because both are minors. No injuries were reported at either school, and the sheriff’s office has not said whether the two cases are connected in any way.
