TALLAHASSEE — Wayne Blanton, a long-time advocate for public education in Florida, passed away on Thursday at the age of 78. With a career spanning four decades, he significantly shaped the landscape of education in the state.

Blanton served as the Executive Director of the Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) from 1985 until his retirement in 2015. He began his journey with the FSBA as an assistant director in 1975, building a reputation as a prominent figure in education policy. Recognized for his steady leadership and charisma, Blanton earned the affection and respect of many within the educational community.

Among his substantial accomplishments was the establishment of the Florida School Board Insurance Trust in 1981, aimed at assisting small and rural school districts that struggled to afford necessary insurance coverage. Furthermore, he was instrumental in creating Florida Palm (Public Assets for Liquidity Management), which provided school districts with secure investment options during a financial crisis that froze their investment pool.

Blanton was particularly regarded for his expertise in managing K-12 educational budgets. His approachable storytelling ability made complex policy discussions more relatable and understandable for educators and administrators alike. His influence was further recognized with the naming of the FSBA building as the Dr. Wayne Blanton Center for School Board Leadership upon his retirement, a tribute to his enduring impact on the organization.

Andrea Messina, the current leader of the FSBA, described Blanton as a stable presence in public education. His dedication to the field earned him a prominent reputation, overseeing superintendent searches for over 80 school districts statewide.

Born in rural North Florida, Blanton grew up in a family that operated a general store, which initially informed his understanding of community needs. He served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971, participating in the Vietnam War. This experience contributed to his later insights and perspectives on education and leadership. He earned a degree in special education from Florida State University, followed by a master’s in education from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, and a doctorate in education administration from FSU.

Throughout his career, Blanton was a tireless advocate for public education, dedicating time to address various issues affecting schools and districts. His retirement years were filled with travel alongside his wife, Sandra Cartee, and cherished moments spent with their four children and seven grandchildren.

In recent years, Blanton faced significant health challenges, battling prostate cancer and later being diagnosed with aggressive leukemia before his death. Funeral arrangements for Wayne Blanton are currently being finalized.

His passing marks the end of an era in Florida’s educational leadership. Blanton leaves a legacy as a stalwart champion for public education, influencing countless lives and institutions across the state.
