Repair work underway at the Governor's Square Mall due to water main break.

News Summary

A water main break at the Governor’s Square Mall in Tallahassee has caused significant disruptions for three days, with many stores closed. The incident, which occurred early Saturday, has led to a sinkhole being observed on Monday. Repair efforts are ongoing, with management keeping the community informed. Dillard’s remains open while other stores struggle with the aftermath. This incident follows another disruption in April, raising concerns about the mall’s infrastructure reliability.

Tallahassee – A water main break at the Governor’s Square Mall has disrupted business operations for three days, with most stores remaining closed throughout the weekend and continuing into Monday. The incident occurred at the mall located at 1500 Apalachee Parkway.

Early Saturday morning, the main water line burst, leading to significant operational challenges for the mall. As crews worked to repair the damage, a sinkhole was observed in the parking lot area on Monday. Mall management confirmed the incident via email, stating that the water line is under repair, but the exact cause of the break remains unknown.

As of Monday morning, there were no updates on the mall’s official social media platforms regarding the status of the closures or the timeline for resuming operations. A security guard informed that the mall was still closed on Monday morning but indicated the possibility of reopening later that evening. However, at least one store, JCPenney, posted a sign notifying customers of its closure due to a water pipe issue.

Despite the ongoing issues, Dillard’s, which operates on a separate water system, remained open for business. This isolated functionality allowed Dillard’s to serve customers while the rest of the mall struggled with the aftermath of the water main break.

The City of Tallahassee has clarified its involvement, confirming that no city employees were part of the repair efforts; all work has been handled by the mall management team. In light of these disruptions, the mall management expressed gratitude for the patience shown by the community during this challenging time.

This incident marks the second occurrence in recent months where infrastructure problems have impacted the mall’s operations. In April, a power outage caused disruptions to services for various stores. These back-to-back incidents have raised concerns about the infrastructure reliability of the Governor’s Square Mall.

Governor’s Square Mall has been a central destination for shopping and recreation in Tallahassee, with a variety of retail options and dining establishments. Its management is actively working to resolve the current water main issue in hopes of restoring normalcy to operations as quickly as possible.

As the repair work continues, customers and local residents are urged to stay informed through the mall’s communication channels for updates regarding store openings and operational status. The management team is hopeful for a swift resolution, allowing patrons to return to the mall soon.
