Tallahassee is celebrating its creative youth through the Winter Festival Youth Art Exhibition. This annual event highlights the artwork of young artists from local schools, showcasing their vibrant imaginations and the dedication of passionate art educators like Marjorie Grussing. The exhibition includes special juried awards for elementary students, further emphasizing the importance of arts education within the community.

Tallahassee Shines Spotlight on Young Artists at Winter Festival Youth Art Exhibition

The charming city of Tallahassee is once again bursting with creativity and talent as it proudly hosts the Winter Festival Youth Art Exhibition, affectionately dubbed Winter Fest. This annual event has become a cherished tradition at City Hall, showcasing the incredible artwork of students from various schools. The exhibition not only highlights the vibrant imaginations of young artists but also serves as a testament to the dedication of incredible arts teachers who make it all possible.

A Passionate Advocate for Arts Education

One of the shining stars of this year’s exhibition is none other than Marjorie Grussing, an inspiring art teacher with an impressive 35 years of experience. Grussing has been involved with the Winter Fest for nearly its entire history, showcasing her commitment to promoting the arts among the youth. For the past 22 years, she has taught at Astoria Park Elementary School, and previously at Sabal Palm Elementary School, instilling a love of creativity in countless children.

From New York to Tallahassee: A Journey of Creativity

Having made the big move to Tallahassee from New York in eighth grade, Grussing comes from a family steeped in education and artistry. Her father, Ralph Davis, is a versatile artist known for his skills in painting, woodturning, and furniture design. His influence has undoubtedly guided Grussing’s own artistic journey. Initially, she set out to study music education at Florida State University; however, she quickly discovered her true passion for Arts Education.

Engaging Young Minds Through Art

Grussing’s talents shine in various forms of art, especially sculpture. She introduces her students to numerous exciting techniques using materials like wood, clay, and mixed media. A highlight in her classroom is the popular clay medallion project, where kindergarteners create stunning necklaces that they wear proudly. It’s projects like these that spark the joy of creation in young minds and foster a lasting appreciation for the arts.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity through Art

The Winter Fest is not just an art exhibition; it’s a wonderful opportunity to elevate the importance of arts education in schools. This year, the event has reintroduced juried awards specifically for elementary students, and Grussing’s student, Caleb Green, received an Outstanding Achievement Award for his exceptional work, “Maasai Tribal Portrait.” This project tied into Grussing’s unit focused on the Maasai Tribe, allowing students to explore different cultures through the medium of art.

Building a Community of Art Educators

As the Elementary Art Group Coordinator, Grussing facilitates monthly meetings for elementary art teachers to support one another and share valuable lesson plans. She keenly understands the challenges new art educators face and emphasizes the importance of having resources accessible to them. Her efforts are crucial in fostering a community of creativity and collaboration amongst teachers.

The Importance of Arts in a Tech-Driven World

In an age where technology dominates, Grussing actively advocates for the necessity of art education, believing that nurturing creativity in students is essential for their growth and expression. As the exhibition runs, from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the City Hall Gallery (located on the second-floor mezzanine of City Hall) until February 10, locals and visitors alike can experience the vibrant works that exemplify the power of arts education.
