Tallahassee Winds Community Symphonic Band to Kick Off Concert Season on September 23

TALLAHASSEE – The Tallahassee Winds Community Symphonic Band will launch its concert season with a performance on Tuesday, September 23, at 7:30 p.m. The event will take place at the Opperman Music Hall on the Florida State University (FSU) campus, and admission is free for all attendees.

The concert, under the direction of ensemble leaders Drs. Patrick Dunnigan and David Plack, promises a diverse program featuring various musical styles and genres. The lineup includes Leonard Bernstein’s “Overture to Candide,” which is inspired by Voltaire’s novella and widely praised for its wit and sophistication, making it a frequent choice in performances.

Other highlighted pieces in the program are Claude Debussy’s “Girl with the Flaxen Hair,” Nat King Cole’s “Mona Lisa,” and Stephen Foster’s “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair.” Additionally, the concert will present John Philip Sousa’s “Fairest of the Fair,” a march inspired by a beautiful woman, as well as “Simple Gifts,” originally a Shaker dance tune, which will be integrated into John P. Zdechlik’s “Chorale and Shaker Dance.” Finally, the evening will feature Dr. Erika Svanoe’s “Author’s Suite,” which draws inspiration from the works of authors such as L.M. Montgomery, Jane Austen, and Mary Shelley, depicting imaginative scenarios involving their characters.

The establishment of the Tallahassee Winds Community Symphonic Band in 1997 was spearheaded by Dr. Bentley Shellahamer, aimed at providing adult musicians with advanced performance opportunities. Since Dr. Shellahamer’s retirement in 2012, Drs. Dunnigan and Plack have continued to uphold the organization’s mission, fostering a sense of community through music.

The upcoming performance is not just an opportunity to enjoy a rich variety of musical pieces, but also a chance for community members to engage with musical creativity. The Tallahassee Winds Community Symphonic Band remains dedicated to enhancing the cultural fabric of the area through accessible musical events.
