TALLAHASSEE – The summer season kicks off in Tallahassee with a series of exciting music festivals, graduation celebrations, and community events. As schools conclude their academic year, locals join in the festivities, reflecting a euphoric mood of freedom and celebration.
Memorial Day weekend, recognized as the unofficial start of summer, will be filled with vibrant activities. Among these is the 73rd Annual Florida Folk Festival, running from May 23 to May 25 at the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park along the scenic Suwannee River. This long-standing festival showcases Florida’s rich cultural heritage through music, dance, crafts, stories, and food, allowing attendees to experience the state’s unique traditions.
More than 300 performances are scheduled across 13 stages during the festival. Renowned artists, including The Lee Boys, Grant Peeples, and Walter Parks, will highlight the event with their performances. For those planning to attend, advance ticket prices are set at $35 per day or $70 for the entire weekend for adults, with prices slightly higher at the gate. Children under six can attend for free, while those between ages six to 16 can enjoy the weekend for just $5.
In addition to the Florida Folk Festival, the Blue Tavern will host several live music events. Kicking off festivities on May 23, Steve Malono will perform at 5 p.m., followed by Pat Puckett at 8 p.m. The Blue Tavern will also feature a 4th Saturday Old Time Jam and notable performances by Peak Dive. Walter Parks, who will also headline the Florida Folk Festival, is scheduled to perform as part of Blue Tavern’s Bluesday Tuesday series.
On May 23 and 24, the North Florida African American Corridor Project will commemorate Florida’s Emancipation Day with guided tours of historic Fort Prospect Bluff, offering residents an opportunity to reflect on important historical narratives.
Further enriching the summer calendar, contemporary Christian singer Lauren Daigle will perform at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall on May 27, with all original tickets remaining valid for the rescheduled event.
An exhibition titled “Women Among Us: Portraits of Strength” is set to open at the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts from May 29 to July 26, offering visitors an insightful experience through art.
Moreover, the Downtown Concert Series launches its 10th anniversary season on May 17, featuring a range of free concerts in Cascades Park. Upcoming highlights include performances by The Lee Boys and the Randall Bramblett Band, promising enjoyable evenings of live music for attendees.
