Tallahassee’s Songwriters Unite to Support Local Nonprofits Through Benefit Concerts
The Tallahassee Chapter of the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) has been actively hosting benefit concerts aimed at raising funds for local nonprofit organizations since 2020. With a rich history dating back to its founding in 1997 by songwriter Ron Patrick, the chapter has played a significant role in connecting aspiring and established singer/songwriters in the community.
Since its inception, the NSAI chapter has grown from an initial 50 members to a thriving group of creative individuals from various musical genres. Membership in NSAI offers singers and songwriters valuable benefits, including opportunities to have original songs heard by music industry professionals, personalized mentorship, weekly workshops, and access to exclusive events and online forums focused on songwriting instruction.
In a bid to enhance community connections, the Tallahassee chapter initiated the “Writers in the Round” benefit concert series in 2020. These concerts provide a platform for local artists to showcase their talents while supporting important causes. Co-coordinator Ken Crawford manages event logistics to ensure smooth operations during the concerts.
The first concert in this series took place on January 11, 2023, benefiting Palaver Tree Theater. Following its success, the second concert, titled “An Intimate Evening of Original Love Songs,” was held on February 14, 2023. Unfortunately, no concerts occurred between March and June 2023 due to prior commitments and holiday schedules. However, the series saw a resurgence of activity with a specially organized benefit concert on April 17, 2025, in the wake of a mass shooting at Florida State University, providing the community with solace through music.
As of July 2025, benefit concerts resumed and additional events were scheduled for the remainder of the year, including performances aimed at supporting various local nonprofits. Upcoming concerts include events at notable venues such as the Challenger Learning Center, Lichgate Historic Site, and Grace Mission, with the remaining concert dates set for September 11, 2025; October 18, 2025; November 14, 2025; and a return engagement at Palaver Tree Theater on December 5, 2025.
Furthermore, the Tallahassee NSAI chapter meets every third Monday of the month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., providing members a regular opportunity to discuss songwriting and collaborate. In addition, an open forum is held on the second Friday of each month to encourage community interaction and engagement among local artists.
This initiative exemplifies the chapter’s commitment to enhancing community awareness through the universal language of music, while also offering a platform for local songwriters to thrive. Current members of the organization include notable local artists such as Jennifer Clark, Maurice Mangum, and Ken Crawford, all of whom contribute to the chapter’s vibrant musical landscape.
As Tallahassee’s songwriters continue to unite in support of their community, local nonprofits benefit not only from the funds raised during these events, but also from the increased visibility and connection to the artistic community that the NSAI chapter fosters.
