TALLAHASSEE – Tallahassee Primary Care Associates (TPCA) is set to close its doors on April 25, marking the end of a chapter for the once-prominent medical group. Following a significant physician exodus, TPCA is running an “everything-must-go” sale, managed by Moecker Auctions of Fort Lauderdale, to auction off its remaining assets.
The online public auction features over 700 lots of leftover furniture, fixtures, and medical equipment, which includes exam tables, waiting room chairs, filing cabinets, computers, oxygen tanks, and medical freezers. Bidding commenced last week and will remain open until May 20. Inspections of the items for sale are scheduled for May 19 at TPCA’s former administrative office located at 1803 Miccosukee Commons Drive.
Bids can be placed through multiple online auction platforms such as Moecker, Proxibid.com, and Bidspotter.com. Buyers are advised to collect their purchases between May 21 and 23.
Founded in 1996, TPCA announced restructuring efforts in January, although it did not reveal plans for closure at that time. However, significant departures among its medical staff have raised questions regarding the practice’s viability. Since late last year, several doctors posted public notices about their departures, leading to uncertainty for patients relying on TPCA for medical care.
The specific reasons behind TPCA’s closure have not been formally communicated, but both physicians and patients have reported financial and operational challenges affecting the practice for years. This situation has forced many patients to seek new healthcare providers, especially as they learned that their TPCA doctors would no longer participate in their insurance networks.
In a farewell letter to the community, the remaining doctors at TPCA expressed their gratitude for the loyalty and trust shown by patients over the years. After the announcement of the closure, the doctors who remained with TPCA moved on to new practices or launched their own. Dr. William Morse has joined Big Bend Hospice. The once-busy parking lot of the TPCA administrative building reflected the declining number of patient visits.
As part of the transition, TPCA’s onsite laboratory stopped accepting appointments on February 1 and ceased operations entirely on February 28. Patients were directed to alternative labs for any future laboratory requirements, and TPCA ensured that medical records would remain secure. Many patients received notifications from their insurers stating that their TPCA healthcare providers were no longer covered under their plans.
Uncertainty resulting from numerous staff departures and vague communication regarding the future has triggered distress and confusion among TPCA’s clientele. However, departing doctors reassured their patients of continued care through new medical practices, often communicating this through advertisements and personal letters.
TPCA’s property ownership changed in 2021 when it was sold for $9 million to a corporate entity of Global Medical REIT. Despite the initial commitment to restructure without compromising patient care quality, the eventual dissolution appears inevitable given the circumstances surrounding the practice’s workforce and operational viability.
As TPCA prepares for its final days, the “everything-must-go” sale serves as a significant chapter closure for the medical practice and a critical juncture for its former patients now navigating the search for new healthcare options.
