The pharmacy features a drive-through service and aims to fill the gap left by recent pharmacy closures in the area, enhancing accessibility for those reliant on public transportation. With extended hours and a larger inventory, the new facility is part of Bond’s broader initiative to improve healthcare access, including plans for a men’s health facility addressing health disparities in the community.

TALLAHASSEE — Bond Community Health Center has inaugurated a new pharmacy on the south side of Tallahassee, strategically located at the intersection of Palmer and South Monroe streets. This full-retail pharmacy is designed to serve all community residents, and it boasts a larger space and expanded inventory compared to the existing pharmacy at Bond’s Gadsden Street campus.

The newly opened pharmacy features a convenient drive-through service, aiming to fill a significant healthcare gap created by the recent closure of several pharmacies in the area, including a CVS on South Monroe Street that closed in March 2023. The loss of this CVS, which had operated for 25 years, left many local residents struggling to access necessary pharmacy services.

Dr. Zandra Glenn, the pharmacy director at Bond, emphasized that local residents were facing challenges in obtaining pharmacy services due to transportation issues exacerbated by the area’s pharmacy closures. The new pharmacy, adjacent to Bond’s Pediatric Center and conveniently located near a city bus stop, is designed to enhance accessibility for those who rely on public transportation.

The pharmacy maintains extended hours for customer convenience, operating until 8 p.m. on weekdays and 6 p.m. on Saturdays, while remaining closed on Sundays. Following a soft opening on June 25, the pharmacy is expected to reach full operational capacity within the next two months, contingent upon securing commitments from third-party healthcare plan providers. An official grand opening event is planned for approximately two months from now, once all necessary credentials are confirmed.

This new pharmacy is a crucial part of Bond Community Health Center’s overarching initiative to improve healthcare access in the region. The center is currently also in the planning phase for a new men’s health facility that aims to address significant health disparities faced by Black men. This facility will provide a range of medical services, affordable housing, and a conference center.

The projected cost for the men’s health facility is estimated at $14 million. Bond has already obtained $500,000 in seed funding from recent state legislation designated for pre-construction planning and is actively seeking an additional $2 million to help fund the project.

County Commissioner Bill Proctor commended Bond’s dedication to enhancing healthcare access for South Tallahassee residents, particularly in light of the recent closures of pharmacies in the area. The new pharmacy will be especially beneficial for those with limited transportation options, allowing residents to transfer their prescription services from the previously closed pharmacies.

The closure of the CVS has highlighted the growing need for accessible pharmacy services and has placed additional strain on residents needing routine healthcare. Bond Community Health Center’s continuing efforts to provide essential healthcare support were reinforced by community members and officials who noted the critical importance of local healthcare resources.

As community health continues to be a priority, the new pharmacy and the upcoming men’s health facility illustrate Bond’s commitment to tackling healthcare challenges within South Tallahassee, ensuring residents have access to the services they need for a healthier future.
