Events kick off with a special poetry reading by Anhinga Press at Blue Tavern, followed by an album performance by Rachel Grubb. The Tallahassee Symphony presents a concert, while the Southern Shakespeare Festival and various local performances engage the community. The 15th Annual Rock the Dock Fishing Tournament and more local activities promise a vibrant cultural landscape this month.
Tallahassee is set to experience a flourishing arts and music scene throughout May, with a diverse roster of events including poetry readings, concerts, and festivals. Local venues will celebrate creativity, while community members are encouraged to engage with the vibrant cultural landscape.
The happenings kick off on May 2 with Anhinga Press hosting a special poetry reading at Blue Tavern from 6-8 p.m. This event commemorates over 50 years of the publishing organization’s work and pays tribute to poet Lynne Knight. Poetry readers scheduled for the evening include notable figures such as Craig Beaven, Rick Campbell, and Melanie Rawls. Attendees are requested to contribute a $10 donation and will have the opportunity to purchase books from featured authors.
On the same night, Rachel Grubb will perform her album “Florida Home” at The Req Room from 9-11 p.m., with tickets available for $20. Grubb will be joined by musicians Lis and Lon Williamson, Kelly Goddard, Danny Goddard, and Kayla Williams, creating an evening of local music that is sure to resonate with audiences.
The excitement continues on May 3, when the Tallahassee Symphony presents “Ravishing Romanticism” at 7:30 p.m. in the Ruby Diamond Concert Hall. The performance will feature conductor Yaniv Dinur and pianist Alexander Korsantia. Ticket prices for this symphonic experience range from $35 to $64, and a free Open Rehearsal is available earlier that day at 10 a.m.
For those looking for something different, the American Legion Post 13 will host The Blood Brothers Tour at 8 p.m. on May 3, with advance tickets available for $30 and $40 on the day of the show. Additionally, the popular John Nemeth Blues Band will perform at The Sound Bar at 7 p.m. on May 4, with advance tickets priced at $25.
The arts community welcomes the 10th Annual Southern Shakespeare Festival at The Adderley Amphitheater, starting on May 8 with performances of “Henry IV, Part 1,” running through May 11. This festival incorporates nightly food trucks, arts and crafts, and appearances from local celebrities, creating an engaging atmosphere for attendees of all ages. Student actors known as Bardlings will present “Twelfth Night” on May 10 and 11.
On May 8, the House of Music Tallahassee will feature performances by Wiley Gaby and Ever More Nest at 7 p.m., with tickets costing $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Multiple performances are also scheduled at Blue Tavern throughout the week, including Sitting Silver with Jack Straub and various artists during happy hour events.
Families and fishing enthusiasts can join the 15th Annual Rock the Dock Fishing Tournament, which runs from May 2-4 at Woolley Park in Panacea. Late online registration for this event closes on May 2 at 7 p.m.
Additional activities throughout the weekend include a fundraiser at the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab called “Mermaids and Mimosas,” scheduled for May 3 from 4-7 p.m. featuring the acoustic duo Hot Tamale. At The Sound Bar, the LCP Band will debut on May 2, followed by a performance from Rhythm Remedy on May 3. The Winehouse will also hold a samba jazz night titled “Jus’ Goes Samba” on May 2.
Lastly, a Chess Festival will take place at Kleman Plaza, along with numerous local bands performing throughout the weekend, making May a culturally rich time for Tallahassee residents and visitors alike.
