Discover the Hidden Histories of Tallahassee with Storied Paths

While many of us think of Florida as a sunshine paradise filled with sandy beaches and thrilling theme parks, the capital city of Tallahassee is rich with captivating history just waiting to be explored. Enter Storied Paths, a new walking tour company founded by a passionate local who has many unique tales to tell. Whether you’re a long-time resident or a first-time visitor, there’s something special about getting up close and personal with the historical gems often overlooked.

A Passion for the Past

The founder of Storied Paths has a lifelong passion for history. Growing up in Michigan and later moving to Jupiter, Florida, she spent her formative years enjoying family vacations that revolved around visiting historical sites. With a bachelor’s degree in religion from Florida State University, she’s always had a deep appreciation for all things history-related. Although she initially took a turn towards academia and even dabbled in a little restaurant biz at Burt Reynolds’ Backstage Restaurant, life took a twist when motherhood came calling.

After pausing her scholarly pursuits to focus on family, a global pandemic hit, and like many, she found herself reassessing what truly mattered in life. It was during this time that her love for history was rekindled, leading her to put plans in motion to share that passion through guided tours.

The Journey of Starting Storied Paths

Once the idea popped into her head, she wasted no time. By December 2022, plans were unveiled to the Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority, who showed immediate enthusiasm for her ghost tour concept. After some research and planning, she officially kicked off the tours in February 2023. From spooky tales to cultural highlights, Storied Paths offers a variety of experiences.

Explore Diverse Tours

Some of the initial tours offered include Ghosts and Grim Tales, exploring the creepy side of Tallahassee’s past, and Tallahassee Black History, which dives deep into the rich culture and contributions of African Americans in the area. Want something savory along the way? Then the Downtown Tallahassee Food Tour adds a delicious touch to your historical trek, set to join the mix in February 2025.

Bringing History to Life

What makes these tours truly special is the stories. From engaging dueling tales to eerie ghost stories that swirl around iconic locations like the Westcott Fountain at FSU, there’s never a dull moment. One standout story from civil rights history, which centers on Florida A&M students and their impactful bus boycott in 1956, highlights how connected history is to the present and our communities.

Making History Fun and Accessible

Through her efforts, the founder of Storied Paths wishes to make history both fun and accessible. This isn’t a typical classroom lecture; it’s a lively experience bringing people face-to-face with Tallahassee’s hidden treasures. She’s passionate about inspiring people to connect more deeply with their surroundings, making everyday locations feel fresh and exciting.

The Future of Storied Paths

There are big dreams on the horizon as Storied Paths aims to partner with local history students to expand the variety of tours. Imagine a university-level student leading a tour steeped in scholarly insight! The focus remains clear: history is a pivotal thread in the fabric of community, and Chandler believes preserving and sharing these stories can help foster connections among residents and visitors alike.

Catching a Glimpse of the Past

So, if you’re in Tallahassee and looking for something a little different, why not join one of the engaging walking tours? With Storied Paths, you’ll not only uncover the city’s layered past but also build a sense of appreciation for its stories all around you. Let’s embark on this historical adventure and rediscover the vibrant narratives that surround us!
