Candlelight vigil for shooting victims in Tallahassee

News Summary

Tallahassee is facing escalating gun violence as two recent shooting incidents lead to multiple arrests. A young man, Frankie Harris, faces attempted murder charges, while another suspect, Phoenix Ikner, is charged with two counts of murder following a mass shooting at Florida State University. The community is addressing safety concerns and honoring the victims during these challenging times.

Tallahassee – Two recent shooting incidents have led to multiple arrests and raised concerns about gun violence in the community. The incidents have generated widespread attention, with authorities addressing the public’s safety and ongoing investigations.

Frankie Harris Arrested for Shooting Incident

On May 1, local authorities apprehended 20-year-old Frankie Harris in connection with a shooting that involved firing at a vehicle occupied by multiple individuals. Harris faces serious charges, including attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Incident Background

The case stems from events that occurred on April 24 when the victim of the shooting had provided a ride to a woman later identified as the suspect in a vehicle theft. The following morning, the victim discovered her vehicle was missing and promptly reported the theft to the Tallahassee Police Department.

On May 1, authorities received information that the victim’s stolen vehicle was located on Silver Slipper Lane. Upon finding the vehicle, the victim followed the suspect to Sheffield’s Body Shop. During this encounter, Harris allegedly exited the stolen car and fired shots at the victim, who later called the police from a nearby Publix to report the incident.

This incident marks the 24th serious gun-related occurrence in Tallahassee this year, contributing to a troubling gun violence trend that has included nine fatalities and at least 17 injuries.

Phoenix Ikner Charged in Mass Shooting

In another significant event, Phoenix Ikner was arrested on May 12 after being released from the hospital. He has been charged with two counts of murder and seven counts of attempted murder following a mass shooting on the Florida State University (FSU) campus on April 17, which resulted in two deaths and six injuries.

Details and Investigation

Ikner allegedly used his mother’s service weapon during the campus shooting and was shot by a police officer amid the chaos. The victims of the shooting have been identified as Robert Morales and Tiru Chabba, as he faces charges stemming from their murders and the subsequent injuries sustained by other individuals.

Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell emphasized the department’s dedication to justice and public safety in light of these violent events. Following the mass shooting, the community responded with a vigil at FSU, honoring the victims and offering counseling services for those affected.

A probable cause affidavit detailing Ikner’s alleged actions will be made public after his initial court appearance, as the State Attorney filed formal charges against him following extensive investigations.

Animal Cruelty Case in Northeast Tallahassee

Separately, on April 26, John Pender was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and child abuse after reportedly shooting his family dog, Athena. Pender claimed the dog had bitten his daughter, which prompted him to shoot the pet twice, even as family members attempted to rescue the animal.

Athena’s Condition and Arrest

Athena underwent medical treatment for two gunshot wounds, which resulted in injuries to her chest and hind leg. Pender was taken into custody the day after the incident.

Broader Context and Community Response

This surge in violence in Tallahassee, particularly on the FSU campus, draws attention to ongoing safety concerns. Previous violent incidents have led to increased efforts for better security measures within educational institutions. As community leaders and local authorities address this crisis, they encourage residents to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting suspicious activities.
