Voter accessibility and a new lease agreement at the airport were also significant topics, alongside candidate updates for the upcoming mayoral race, setting the stage for future community leadership.

Tallahassee – The Tallahassee City Commission held its meeting on September 3, 2025, highlighting various community initiatives, budget approvals, and candidate updates ahead of the upcoming election cycle. Key decisions were made concerning public safety, community engagement, and the management of city funds.

During the meeting, Tom Napier from Honor Flight Tallahassee was recognized for the Commission’s steadfast support of the organization, which honors veterans. Additionally, a proclamation for “Click it Twice to Save a Life Day” was presented, aiming to raise awareness and reduce gun thefts within the community.

The Commission also celebrated the 55th Anniversary Weekend of The Chi Theta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. with an official proclamation. Consent agenda items, including several routine administrative matters, were unanimously approved with a 5-0 vote alongside ordinance items 11.01 through 11.05, which were also passed without opposition.

In a significant decision, the Commission voted unanimously to postpone any action on the 287(g) agreement between the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) and the federal government concerning immigration enforcement. This decision came in light of awaiting a ruling from a state court on the matter.

Another key topic was the residency requirement, where the Commission voted 4-1 to uphold the current 365-days-before-qualifying rule for election candidates. This ruling was highlighted amidst ongoing discussions about voter accessibility.

The Speed Zone Enforcement Annual Report was presented, revealing that 6,629 traffic violations had been recorded, with 4,561 fees paid and 1,643 currently pending. This led to a total revenue generation of $435,600 from speed zone cameras, which will be allocated to the city, the school crossing guard program, and other relevant state departments.

A report on artificial intelligence (AI) applications within the city also garnered attention. Following a detailed presentation on policy frameworks and existing uses, it was accepted by the Commission, showcasing AI’s role in enhancing public safety and improving customer service interactions.

The Commission voted to negotiate a lease agreement with the Department of Commerce for property at Tallahassee International Airport. This agreement is expected to bring in an additional revenue stream of $334,919.60 for the city.

A public hearing was convened during the meeting to discuss the tentative FY26 Budget and Millage Rate, which passed with a narrow 3-2 vote. The budget discussion was marked by controversy over the proposed fire services fee, a topic of much debate among residents.

Additionally, health plan rates for calendar year 2026 and amendments to the fiscal year 2025 budget were successfully approved during the session.

Candidate Updates

With the upcoming mayoral election, three candidates have filed to contest City Commissioner Jeremy Matlow’s seat as he runs for mayor. The candidates include PJ Perez, Talethia Edwards, and Norm Roche.

PJ Perez, a teacher with 14 years of experience, expressed intent to engage the community on critical issues such as affordability. Norm Roche, who has previously served as a Pinellas County Commissioner, emphasized the need for a concentrated focus on city challenges and promoting unity among residents.

Talethia Edwards is actively engaged in community affairs and aims to address pressing issues like homelessness and affordable housing, positioning herself as a candidate dedicated to the unity and leadership for all residents.
