TALLAHASSEE – Two local authors, J. Mikel Boland and Mark Mustian, are set to launch their new books, giving residents a chance to dive into fresh narratives. Boland’s debut novel, “The Journals of Aaron the White,” is the first in the anticipated “Portal Jumpers 1” series, while Mustian’s third novel, “Boy With Wings,” explores powerful themes of self-acceptance and identity.
Boland’s “The Journals of Aaron the White” features a classic battle between good and evil set in a mystical land known as Sorra. The protagonist, Aaron, finds himself unexpectedly summoned to save this magical realm. Throughout the story, Aaron encounters a diverse cast of characters, including a Noran named Mikaal and unique beings like OrOboids—tri-pedal herbivores that communicate telepathically—and Garanths, who possess four arms and backward legs. Central to the narrative are themes of courage and self-doubt as Aaron embarks on a hero’s journey, ultimately discovering his magical abilities and developing a romantic relationship with Coral, the last surviving member of the SeaWind Princesses. Boland’s novel will be launched on June 28 at My Favorite Books in Tallahassee, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Mustian’s “Boy With Wings,” released on March 15, 2024, tells the story of a young man who is born with wings and faces challenges of acceptance in the Deep South. This gripping narrative includes significant themes of prejudice and self-identity, enriching the reader’s understanding of what it means to be different in a world that often marginalizes those who do not conform. Mustian, known for his previous novels “The Return” and “Gendarme,” has a significant background in community involvement, notably as a former city commissioner and President of the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce. He is also the founder of the Word of South festival, which celebrates literature and music and is now entering its 11th year. Mustian is scheduled to present “Boy With Wings” at this year’s festival on April 5, alongside fellow author Danny Bedrosian.
In addition to Boland and Mustian, other Tallahassee authors are also launching their works. Rhett DeVane’s debut middle-grade novel, “The Dragon Box,” is set for release on November 16. This whimsical tale follows Aidan McAllister, who discovers magical creatures during a family trip to Tallahassee. The book is designed to entertain young readers with its blend of humor, fantasy, and adventure.
Furthermore, Jennifer Schomburg Kanke is set to debut her poetry collection, “The Swellest Wife Anyone Ever Had.” This work offers a reflective view of her grandmother’s life through both personal anecdotes and meticulous historical research. Kanke’s poetry explores profound themes such as love, loss, and the passage of time, unraveling her grandmother’s experiences and the broader context of women’s history.
All books mentioned can be found at local Tallahassee bookshops, including Midtown Reader and My Favorite Books, encouraging readers to support authors with strong ties to the community. These literary events not only highlight the rich storytelling present in Tallahassee but also strengthen the local culture surrounding literature and creative expression.
