Tallahassee Hosts Movers and Makers Art Exhibit at Local Airport

The Movers and Makers exhibit currently on display at Tallahassee International Airport showcases the work of five local artists and will run through November 3. The event is organized by the Council on Culture and Arts (COCA) and aims to highlight artistic talent within the community.

The featured artists in this year’s exhibit include Leslie Anderson, Valerie S. Goodwin, Jennifer Lange, Will Mueller, and Kenneth Reshard. Reshard, a prominent local artist, is recognized for his diverse body of work that encompasses sculpture, painting, photography, ceramics, and pottery.

Kenneth Reshard: A Lifelong Artist

Kenneth Reshard, a lifelong resident of Tallahassee, draws inspiration from the artistic talents of his family, including a grandfather who was a carpenter and parents known for their culinary skills. He has a passion for gardening, growing collards and fruit trees, and credits his husband, John, for their gardening success. Reshard’s home also serves as a gallery that features works from local artists he admires.

Reflections on the Local Art Scene

Reshard recalls the vibrant art scene in Tallahassee 25-30 years ago, noting a decline in artistic activity since that time. Nevertheless, he maintains an optimistic outlook, attributing his hope to organizations like COCA. Recently, Reshard has focused more on photography, particularly in capturing single subjects within his images. He has amassed an impressive archive of over 60,000 photographs, which he is currently cataloguing while balancing an active art career and a day job.

A recent vacation provided Reshard with ample opportunities for photography; he took over 6,000 photos during his travels through Amsterdam, Switzerland, and Italy. His past exhibits, such as those at the Om Café and his first solo show at the airport gallery, have been highly successful, with every piece sold during his solo exhibit.

Challenges and Future Works

Despite his achievements, Reshard faced challenges when a shipment of ceramics scheduled for a gallery in Chicago was destroyed. Fortunately, he was insured and quickly produced replacements for the lost work. Currently, his pieces are displayed at Bella Bella restaurant, and he is planning a new exhibit that will explore themes of societal relevance through ceramics and photography.

Details of the Exhibit

The Movers and Makers exhibit is located at the Tallahassee Artport Gallery in the airport, making it accessible to travelers and locals alike. For visitor inquiries and further details, interested individuals can reach out to the gallery directly.

The ongoing support and engagement by organizations like COCA continue to foster a creative environment in Tallahassee, allowing local artists to showcase their talents and contribute to the cultural landscape of the community.
