News Summary

Sweetfirmations, a family-owned and Black-owned bakery in Tallahassee, is celebrating its first anniversary after navigating various challenges. The bakery, which transitioned from a small cottage to a physical storefront, has gained community support and positive customer feedback, particularly for its signature cakes. The owners, Ladell and Kimberly Bryant, are dedicated to sharing joy and preserving family traditions through their baked goods, while also planning to launch a nonprofit initiative to support children in need.

Tallahassee – Sweetfirmations, a family-owned and Black-owned bakery, is celebrating its successful first year in business this May, after overcoming numerous challenges typical for new eateries. Located at 1318 S. Adams St., the bakery has become a beloved staple in the community, thanks to the commitment and creativity of its owners, Ladell and Kimberly Bryant.

Opening their brick-and-mortar location last spring marked a significant leap of faith for the Bryants, who had previously operated out of a small cottage for six years. With support from the community, including a $5,259.80 startup grant from The Greater Frenchtown Southside (GFS) Business Facility Improvement Program, the bakery made its transition to a physical storefront. The bakery occupies a renovated church building, customized to meet their baking needs.

Customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising Sweetfirmations for having the “best cake” in town. The inviting aroma that greets patrons as they enter has become a signature feature of their experience. The establishment is adorned with whimsical decorations, including large dessert replicas and grassy walls, creating an inviting atmosphere that reflects the joy found in baking.

Mission and Community Impact

The name “Sweetfirmations” represents not just delicious desserts but also positive affirmations that contribute to the bakery’s mission. Customers receive affirmation stickers with each order, reinforcing positivity and community spirit. Inspired by her childhood memories of her grandmother’s baking for the neighborhood, Kimberly Bryant aims to not only sell sweet treats but also share joy and preserve family traditions through their baked goods.

Throughout the first year, the bakery has seen significant growth, attributed to increasing customer awareness leading to repeat business and recommendations. They focus on providing accessible pricing to ensure every member of the community can enjoy their offerings. Popular items on the menu include red velvet cake, lemon and blueberry cake, banana puddings, cookies, brownies, and a cherished rainbow cake derived from Kimberly’s grandmother’s secret recipes.

Future Aspirations

In addition to baking, Sweetfirmations aims to further its community engagement by establishing a nonprofit arm called Angel Twenty-Two. This initiative is designed to provide cakes for young children in need, similar to a Make-A-Wish foundation, but with a sweet twist. The Bryants envision a cooking classroom within their bakery to teach baking skills and foster culinary pathways for troubled youth. This commitment to community and empowerment highlights their long-term vision of making a positive impact beyond the bakery.

Sweetfirmations operates from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The bakery actively engages with the local community through social media, frequently announcing new treats and updates of interest. Following a successful first year, Sweetfirmations looks forward to continuing its journey of growth, community impact, and culinary delights for years to come.
