Stormy weather over Tallahassee with dark clouds and rain.

News Summary

Tallahassee braces for severe weather this week, with forecasts predicting tornadoes and heavy rainfall. Following Monday’s radar-confirmed tornadoes in Leon County, the region faces further storms. The weekend may bring stronger tornado threats. Residents are urged to stay informed as conditions evolve.

TALLAHASSEE – Severe weather conditions are expected to impact the local area this week, with forecasts predicting tornadoes and heavy rainfall. Following a significant weather outbreak that saw two radar-confirmed tornadoes reported in Leon County Monday afternoon, the region continues to brace for potent storms.

As Memorial Day came to a close, southern Georgia counties experienced brief showers and storms, but most areas, including Tallahassee, enjoyed clear skies with temperatures soaring into the 90s. The temperature is expected to drop to the lower 70s overnight, setting the stage for a partly cloudy Tuesday.

On Tuesday, temperatures are forecasted to escalate through the 70s and 80s, climaxing in the mid-90s. As the day progresses, spotty showers will develop around and north of Interstate 10. Despite some minor weather threats, including damaging wind gusts and small hail, the current severe weather threat remains low.

Looking ahead, an increase in rainfall coverage is anticipated later in the week, with scattered storms becoming more common. Rainfall totals over the next six to seven days are expected to reach between 4-8 inches in many areas, with localized amounts possibly exceeding a foot. A marginal risk (level 1 of 4) for excessive rainfall has been issued across northern Florida and southern Georgia. If persistent rain continues to affect the same areas, flood watches may be implemented.

A tornado watch for Leon County has recently been canceled following the confirmation of tornadoes in the southwestern parts of Leon County around Bloxham and the northeastern areas near Lake Iamonia. While some damage to structures and downed trees have been reported, no injuries have been confirmed, as gusts recorded by the National Weather Service (NWS) reached 64 mph at Lanark Village and 46 mph in Apalachicola.

Earlier in the day, a tornado warning had been issued for parts of Leon County, including Bradfordville, as residents received cell phone alerts regarding the potential of tornado activity. Mobile home residents were particularly urged to seek sturdy shelter during these severe weather threats.

The forecast for the upcoming weekend suggests the potential for strong and long-track tornadoes due to an incoming storm system, heightening the urgency for residents to stay informed and prepared for further severe weather warnings. Meteorologists emphasize the importance of awareness, as the severity and frequency of storms in the region have been recognized as a significant cause for concern based on recent weather projections.

In response to the ongoing situation, the Leon County’s Emergency Operations Center may be activated should conditions worsen. Residents are advised to monitor weather updates actively and prepare for any potential developments as this severe weather pattern unfolds.
