News Summary

Costco Wholesale Corp. has announced plans to open a new store in South Miami-Dade, near Dolphin Mall. The new location will feature 159,212 square feet of retail space, including sections for tire sales and liquor. With 800 parking spaces, enhanced accessibility, and the potential for significant economic impact, this store is expected to provide more employment opportunities and benefits to the local community, including free memberships for low-income residents.

Exciting News for South Miami-Dade: A New Costco Store is Coming!

South Miami-Dade is buzzing with some thrilling news as Costco Wholesale Corp. has officially submitted plans for a brand new store set to open in the area. Located just west of the popular Dolphin Mall, this location marks the second Costco for Florida’s most populated county, Miami-Dade, and it’s expected to be a game-changer for the community!

What’s in Store?

The new Costco is going to take up an impressive 159,212 square feet on a sprawling 20-acre plot at 11850 N.W. 22nd Street, right beside Topgolf Doral. For all you tire enthusiasts, you’ll be excited to know that this store will feature 4,857 square feet dedicated to tire sales and installation – which is bound to come in handy on those busy weekends. Plus, if you enjoy a nice drink, they will also have a 2,004 square feet section for liquor sales. And let’s not forget the convenience of an on-site gas station!

Parking and Accessibility

One of the essential features of the new Costco will be the provision of 800 parking spaces, making it easy for shoppers to come and go without the stress of finding a spot. This is particularly great news for families and large groups who love to make bulk buys!

What Happened to the Original Plans?

The 20-acre site wasn’t the first choice for development as previous plans were made to construct a 1 million-square-foot indoor sports complex called Destination Sport Miami. Unfortunately, those plans did not come to fruition, leaving the area open for an equally exciting venture like Costco – a win for the community!

Costco’s Expanding Footprint

Currently, Costco already has four locations in Miami-Dade and is in the process of developing another store in Cutler Bay, which is making its way through the approval process. Given that Miami-Dade County is home to over 2.6 million residents, this influx of Costco stores is set to boost accessibility for all those shoppers looking to score big deals on groceries, electronics, and everything in between!

Support from Local Leaders

The local government is also on board with this project, as the Miami-Dade County Commission recently approved the sale of a 17-acre county-owned parcel to developer Michael Swerdlow for $8.1 million. This land has been laying unused for more than two decades, held previously by the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department. Interestingly, the land’s market value was much higher than the sale price, leading to some discussion about property valuations.

Economic Benefits Galore!

There’s no doubt this project will bring in economic benefits! It’s estimated that the new Costco could generate around $217 million over the next ten years through various taxes and job creation. One of the most heartwarming aspects of this project is that the developer plans to offer 5,000 free memberships to residents in the area who earn less than $50,000 annually, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the perks of Costco shopping!

Housing Development Plans

Moreover, a memorandum has been signed with the Water and Sewer Department to develop attainable housing for county employees, addressing some of the urgent needs in the region.

A Community Food Oasis

It’s worth noting that the area is often described as a “food desert,” with high unemployment rates. The new Costco is seen as a beacon of hope for residents who will have access to affordable groceries and essential products that may have previously been out of reach.

Final Thoughts

While there have been some objections regarding the sale of the county land and discussions about potential hardships that may arise from this development, the expected boost this Costco store brings could outweigh these concerns. With so many benefits lined up, residents of South Miami-Dade have much to look forward to as they prepare for this exciting addition to their community!
