Traffic Intersection with Signal Pole

News Summary

A 33-year-old man climbed a pedestrian signal pole at a busy intersection in Florida, causing minimal traffic delays. The individual, in a mental health crisis, interacted with bystanders before coming down after negotiations. This marks his fourth similar incident, raising concerns about mental health support in the community. Authorities will assess his condition to prevent future occurrences.

Florida – A 33-year-old man, Todd Fitzroy Boothe, climbed a pedestrian signal pole at the intersection of State Road 7 and Miramar Parkway on June 2, 2025. The incident, which began around 7:30 a.m., led to a brief disruption to traffic in the area but was resolved without significant public risk.

According to the Miramar Police Department, Boothe was in the midst of a mental health crisis when he climbed the signal pole after being seen moving in and out of traffic. His behavior during the incident included waving at bystanders, blowing kisses, and singing while perched high above the ground. Authorities were alerted to the situation, prompting the dispatched officers and crisis negotiators to approach the scene.

After approximately two and a half to three hours of negotiation, Boothe voluntarily descended from the pole. Although he was cooperative upon coming down, police stated he would be taken into custody as part of the protocol following such incidents. Fortunately, there was no immediate risk of danger to either Boothe himself or the public, although the potential for injury from a fall was a concern.

This incident marks Boothe’s fourth occurrence involving him climbing structures in similar fashion. His previous incidents include climbing a traffic light in South Beach in 2021 and climbing onto a Miramar ambulance in September 2023. Authorities believe that Boothe’s motivations extend beyond the thrill; they suggest he may seek attention while dealing with ongoing mental health challenges.

Following the incident, Boothe was processed, and social services will conduct an assessment to determine the best course of action regarding his mental health and wellbeing. The police emphasized that these evaluations are crucial in preventing similar events in the future.

Traffic conditions experienced only minimal impact during the incident, with slight delays and a brief lane closure. Officers quickly managed the situation to ensure that normal traffic flow could resume as safety was maintained through appropriate crowd control and communication.

The concerning pattern of Boothe’s behavior raises important questions about mental health support in the community, particularly regarding how authorities manage cases involving individuals struggling with such crises. This incident serves as a reminder of the necessity for systematic approaches to mental health emergencies, reinforcing the need for both immediate response plans and long-term support strategies.

As communities strive to address mental health issues, the response from both law enforcement and social services will be critical in shaping future interventions. Continuous dialogue between mental health professionals, law enforcement, and local resources is essential to create awareness and provide effective support for individuals like Boothe. Authorities continue to monitor recurring cases to better inform their approach to mental health crises and public safety.
