Kilauea Volcano Comes Alive Again in Hawaii

By 5:30 a.m., a staggering 500 acres of lava had blanketed the caldera floor—basically a large basin formed by previous volcanic eruptions. Just imagine the glowing rivers of lava flowing and expanding across the land while being safe behind park boundaries!

Ken Hon, the head scientist at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, commented during a livestream chat, “It’s a pretty exciting time … This is a really big voluminous eruption.” He also noted that this latest outburst is the fifth eruption Kilauea has exhibited since December 2020. That’s quite a history of rumbles and eruptions!

Scientists observed that the volcanic activity began to slow down by the afternoon. By around 5 p.m., the lava covered, more or less, just over a square mile around the volcano, and was estimated to be about 1 yard thick. Can you imagine how heavy that is?
