This accolade recognizes the garage’s cutting-edge design and sustainability features, making it a model for urban parking solutions.
The VyStar Parking Garage, located at 28 W. Forsyth Street, stands as a seven-story, 239,929-square-foot structure. Equipped with 767 parking spaces, as well as nine electric-charging stations, it not only meets the demand for parking but also emphasizes sustainability by promoting electric vehicle use. Additionally, the garage includes ground-level commercial spaces that cater to the community.
This award celebrates projects that showcase innovation, sustainability, and community impact. According to Brian Kitchens, VyStar’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Real Estate, the recognition highlights their commitment to creating urban spaces that are both efficient and community-focused. He expressed gratitude to the Urban Land Institute and all partners who contributed to this achievement.
The garage not only serves as a parking facility but also enhances the urban landscape of downtown Jacksonville. Its fabric-covered steel façade and customizable LED lighting give the structure an appealing architectural presence. Furthermore, the design significantly improves pedestrian experiences along Laura, Main, and Forsyth streets, effectively enriching walkability in the area.
VyStar has actively partnered with local organizations, including Jacksonville Children’s Chorus and Level the Playing Field Leadership Academy, to occupy the retail spaces within the garage. These collaborations aim to enhance the community’s social fabric. Additionally, ongoing development by Danis Construction for establishments like Pour Taproom and Pizza Dynamo will further encourage community engagement right in the heart of downtown.
Since relocating its headquarters to Jacksonville, VyStar has focused on energizing the city’s core. The design and development of the VyStar Parking Garage reflect their commitment to transforming urban spaces in North Florida. This parking structure sets a new benchmark for future urban projects in the region, showcasing how parking solutions can contribute to vibrant community dynamics.
As cities seek to balance growth with livability, the recognition of the VyStar Parking Garage serves as inspiration. Its dedication to sustainability and community integration must lead future developments in urban design. The ULI Awards for Excellence continue to spotlight projects that not only meet current urban needs but also foster community interactions, ensuring that urban areas evolve sustainably.
Jacksonville’s effort to rethink urban spaces through the VyStar Parking Garage is a step forward in the journey towards a connected, sustainable urban environment. This achievement marks a pivotal moment for both the city and its residents, as they navigate the balance between development and community focus.
