Kenneth Austin was born on September 3, 1953, in Harlem Hospital, New York City, as the fifth of seven children of Ed and George Esther Austin. His early education began at Public School No. 53 in Bronx, New York, before his family moved to Eustis, Florida, where he attended Bates Avenue High School, an all-black institution serving grades 1 through 12. He later completed his education at Eustis High School (EHS), where he excelled in both academics and extracurricular activities.
At EHS, Kenneth was not only academically gifted but also an enthusiastic participant in sports, engaging in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field. His musical talents were showcased as a trombone player in the school band. Leadership came naturally to him; he served as President of the Inter-Club Council, Vice President of the Student Council, and held roles in the Esquires Club. Kenneth’s achievements earned him four scholarships upon graduating in 1971 from Eustis High School.
The scholarships he received came from several notable organizations including Martin Marietta Corporation, the Most Worshipful Grand Masons Masonic Lodge, the Eustis Kiwanis Club, and the Horizons Unlimited Program at Florida State University (FSU). Early on, he embraced his faith, accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and was actively involved in St. James AME Church, volunteering in various capacities including youth usher and the Buildings and Grounds ministry.
In 1971, Kenneth relocated to Tallahassee to pursue higher education at Florida State University. During his time at FSU, he became a founding member of the FSU Speech Choir and was an active participant in the Black Student Union. While there, he achieved a position on the FSU men’s basketball team as a non-scholarship walk-on and was later recognized with the “Scholar Athlete Award” for his impressive combination of academic and athletic accomplishments. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Government and Communication in 1975 and followed this with a Master of Science in Public Administration in 1979.
Following his academic achievements, Kenneth embarked on a professional career in public administration, beginning as a Management Systems Analyst for the City of Tallahassee. Over the years, he advanced through various roles, including Assistant to the City Manager, Acting Director of Community Improvement, Director of General Services, and Director of Aviation, before retiring in 2011. His contributions to the field were recognized through his involvement in professional organizations, including the Florida Airports Council and serving as the National President of the Conference of Minority Public Administrators.
Kenneth’s legacy extended beyond his professional life; he was honored with Life Memberships in both the FSU Alumni Association and the FSU Black Alumni Association. His remarkable service and achievements culminated in his induction into the FSU Alumni Association Circle of Gold in 2021. He was also a devoted member of Bethel AME Church, where he actively participated in teaching and committee roles.
Outside of his professional commitments, Kenneth had a passion for golf and was an avid sports enthusiast. He is remembered not only for his personal achievements but also for his unwavering commitment to serving others, a value instilled in him during his formative years.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Dr. Debra Dabney Austin, and their daughters, Kimberly Austin Crowell and Kendrea Austin Kreipke. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in his family’s legacy and the community he served so diligently.
