News Summary

Florida State University is enhancing its Board of Trustees with the addition of Brian Murphy and Tim Weisheyer. Murphy, a successful CEO in cybersecurity, replaces John Thiel, while Weisheyer brings educational leadership from the Osceola County School Board. Their appointments highlight FSU’s commitment to strong leadership for its governance.

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Florida State University (FSU) is set to welcome two new members to its Board of Trustees, enhancing its governance team. The Florida Board of Governors has appointed FSU alumnus Brian Murphy and Tim Weisheyer as the latest appointees, effective immediately and scheduled to take effect on August 30, 2025, respectively.

Brian Murphy, the founder and CEO of ReliaQuest, a Tampa-based cybersecurity technology company valued at over $3.4 billion, will assume his role on the board to replace former Merrill Lynch executive John Thiel. Murphy is an esteemed graduate of FSU, where he earned degrees in accounting and finance in 2000. He has had an influential presence in FSU’s academic community, having previously served on the governing board of the FSU College of Business. Moreover, his contributions were recognized in 2022 when he was inducted into the College’s Hall of Fame.

Brian Lamb, chair of the Board of Governors, voiced strong support for Murphy’s appointment, highlighting his substantial business acumen and its potential benefit to the university. ReliaQuest’s impressive growth under Murphy’s leadership—employing over 1,200 individuals and serving over 1,000 customers—demonstrates his ability to manage and grow a successful organization.

On the same day that Murphy was appointed, Tim Weisheyer was designated as a new board member by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. While Weisheyer’s term does not begin until 2025, the details regarding the board member he replaces are currently not disclosed. Weisheyer brings to the board a wealth of experience from his prior role as a member of the Osceola County School Board, as well as his leadership experience as president of the Florida School Boards Association.

In addition to his educational background, Weisheyer operates two real estate businesses: Dream Builders Realty and DBR Commercial Real Estate Services. He Also serves as the CEO of Strategic Advantage Consulting and holds a position on the board of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, where he was appointed chair last year. His leadership credentials further extend to his election as president of the Florida Realtors Association in 2024 and his previous presidency of the Osceola County Association of Realtors.

The appointment of Weisheyer to the FSU Board of Trustees is contingent on confirmation by the Florida Senate. His extensive background in education, including work as a public school teacher and a dedication to educational pursuits, positions him as a well-rounded addition to the board.

Role of the Board of Trustees

The FSU Board of Trustees is composed of 13 members and serves as the university’s governing body. As the legal and technical owner of the institution, the board is responsible for setting policies and overseeing the administration of the university. This governance structure is essential for ensuring FSU meets its educational and operational objectives.

Conclusion

The appointments of Brian Murphy and Tim Weisheyer signify a commitment to seasoned leadership on the FSU Board of Trustees, which promises to enhance the university’s strategic vision and operational effectiveness. With their diverse backgrounds in business and education, both new members are expected to contribute significantly to FSU’s governance and overall mission.
