FSU baseball players warming up on the field with fans in the stands

News Summary

Florida State University baseball kicks off its regional playoff run today against Bethune-Cookman. The Seminoles, aiming for their first College World Series appearance since 2000, have a strong lineup and a perfect record against their competitors. The team hopes to leverage their home-field advantage and a potent pitching strategy as they seek to advance in the NCAA tournament.

Tallahassee, FL – Florida State University (FSU) baseball kicks off its run in the Tallahassee Regional today at 3 PM against Bethune-Cookman. The Seminoles, seeded ninth nationally with a record of 38-14, are looking to advance to the College World Series for the first time since their back-to-back appearances in 1999 and 2000.

FSU heads into the regional as hosts for the second consecutive year after securing a ninth seed in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. Their competition includes Bethune-Cookman, which holds a 37-21 record and has faced FSU earlier in the season, where the Seminoles won 9-7. Following the match against Bethune-Cookman, FSU will play again on Saturday, with head coach Link Jarrett implementing a strategic change to the pitching rotation. Joey Volini will start today, while Jamie Arnold is scheduled to pitch on Saturday.

The Seminoles come into the regional with a potent offensive lineup, led by their top four hitters: Gage Harrelson, Alex Lodise—who is the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Year—Max Williams, and Myles Bailey. This quartet collectively produced an impressive 54 home runs and drove in 196 runs this season, significantly contributing to the team’s success.

In terms of pitching, Arnold stands out with a team-leading 3.04 ERA, complemented by 97 strikeouts, enhancing the Seminoles’ chances in the tournament. FSU boasts a solid home record of 24-7 and has demonstrated particular strength with Arnold on the mound, achieving a 6-1 record during his home games.

The Tallahassee Regional also features Northeastern and Mississippi State, with both teams slated to compete in tonight’s game. Northeastern enters the tournament boasting a nation-leading 27-game winning streak, while Mississippi State is under interim management, viewing the regional as an opportunity to establish consistency after recording a 9-2 record since the coaching change.

A historical perspective favors FSU in their matchup against Bethune-Cookman, as the Seminoles hold a perfect 9-0 record against them in previous encounters. Furthermore, FSU plans to host at least six recruits during the first weekend of the summer recruiting visits, which could bolster the program’s future prospects.

In addition to the competitive baseball landscape, FSU continues to showcase athletic excellence across various sports. Notably, Kaelyaah Liburd, a runner from FSU, recently set the British Virgin Islands women’s 400m record, underscoring the university’s commitment to athletic achievement beyond the baseball diamond.

The winner of the Tallahassee Regional will move on to face the champion of the Corvallis Regional, which is hosted by No. 8 Oregon State. FSU’s aspirations are high as they embark on this critical tournament, looking to capitalize on home-field advantage and a strong performance from their seasoned players.
