FSU leadership embraces these developments as the university continues its strive for excellence in education and innovation.

Exciting Changes at Florida State University in Tallahassee!

Big news is coming out of Tallahassee as Florida State University (FSU) welcomes a new addition to its Board of Trustees. The Florida Board of Governors has officially appointed Peter Jones, an FSU alumnus and Clearwater native, effective immediately. This appointment marks a significant step forward in the university’s ongoing efforts for growth and expansion.

A Strong Business Background

Peter Jones isn’t just any new board member. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from FSU, having graduated back in 1977. Jones built an impressive career at Franklin Templeton, a global investment management firm where he ultimately became the president and chairman. Over his long career—spanning several decades—he worked tirelessly for the company, retiring in 2015 after leading them for many successful years.

Jones hasn’t strayed far from his roots; after his retirement, he returned to FSU as an adjunct professor. He enriched students’ lives by teaching finance in study abroad programs located in stunning cities like London and Valencia. Not one to shy away from contributing to his alma mater, Jones has been involved in various committees at FSU, including his role as chair of the Audit Committee for the FSU International Program Association.

New Horizons for FSU

The appointment comes as FSU embarks on some impressive initiatives and plans for expansion. Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Peter Collins, shared updates about the university’s strategic plans during a recent luncheon with local business leaders. Notably, Collins discussed ongoing litigation involving FSU and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) as well as updates on innovative projects like FSU Health.

The FSU Health initiative is positioned to be a game-changer for the university, aiming to boost clinical research and foster excellence among physician scientists in the Tallahassee area. It’s an exciting prospect for healthcare advancement!

Budgeting for the Future

In terms of finances, FSU has big plans! The board has approved a historic $3 billion operating budget for the upcoming 2024-2025 fiscal year, marking a staggering 50% increase over the past five years. A significant portion—over $500 million—will be dedicated to capital projects. This includes much-needed upgrades for iconic facilities like Doak Campbell Stadium and the College of Business’s Legacy Hall, along with plans for a new academic health center developed in partnership with Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare.

Accommodating Growing Enrollment

With student enrollment on the rise—FSU received an overwhelming 76,000 applications for just 6,000 spots—the university is looking to build not one but four new residence halls! There’s a clear goal to ensure that all eligible freshmen can live on campus by the end of Collins’ leadership term.

Eager to support these initiatives, FSU also has plans in place to restructure its Foundation to bolster funding, including the creation of 30 new positions aimed at enhancing its fundraising efforts.

Looking Ahead

FSU President Richard McCullough has been commended for his leadership role during this exciting period, emphasizing the importance of keeping alumni closely connected to governance. With fresh faces like Peter Jones and a bullish outlook for the years ahead, FSU is on the cusp of exciting changes.

With all these advancements, FSU continues to shine as a top-tier university dedicated to enhancing education and innovation, making it an exciting time to be part of the FSU community!
