Florida State University Football: Mike Norvell Eyes 2025 Turnaround After Disappointing 2-10 Season in 2024

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – Florida State University football coach Mike Norvell is looking to rebound from a disappointing 2-10 season in 2024, as he gears up for the 2025 season with renewed optimism and strategic changes. Following an impressive national championship-caliber season in 2023, where the team finished with a perfect 13-0 record, the Seminoles experienced one of the most significant declines in modern college football history.

The 2024 season was particularly disheartening for Florida State fans, as the team entered the year with high expectations after returning a talented roster, which included ten players who were drafted into the NFL. Despite this, the Seminoles failed to meet these expectations, resulting in a dramatic drop in performance.

Norvell, who begins his sixth year at FSU, has already made notable coaching hires in an effort to strengthen the program. Joining the staff are offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and defensive coordinator Tony White. This restructuring aims to create a more robust program moving forward. The upcoming season will see the Seminoles open against the Alabama Crimson Tide on August 30, 2025, in Tallahassee.

Previous Performance and Rebuilding Efforts

Florida State’s recent history reflects a roller-coaster journey since Jimbo Fisher took the helm as head coach following Bobby Bowden’s retirement in 2009. Under Fisher, the team peaked with a national championship in 2013 but experienced a decline that saw their record drop to 7-6 in 2017. Norvell’s trajectory tracks closely to Fisher’s, with an opening record of 3-6 in 2020 followed by 5-7 in 2021, and miraculous back-to-back seasons of 10-3 and 13-0 in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

The disappointment of 2024 was particularly stark given the backdrop of the team’s recent success. In 2023, Florida State won 19 consecutive games, culminating in a victorious run through the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship but falling short in the College Football Playoff and ultimately losing to Georgia in the Orange Bowl.

Looking Ahead to 2025

With a goal of improving the team’s performance, Coach Norvell expressed the need for a stronger recruiting effort. The current recruiting class ranks 22nd nationally, with nine commitments, but Norvell aims to assemble a Top 10 recruiting class to elevate the program and build towards future success.

Florida State has also made strides in player acquisition through the transfer portal, currently holding the No. 6 ranking for transfer classes. Key transfers, including quarterback Thomas Castellanos from Boston College, are expected to bolster the roster and drive improvements on the field.

Assessing potential recruits in the transfer portal is crucial for the program’s future. Norvell’s approach focuses on evaluating talent but also emphasizes team cohesion, personalities, and mindsets, comparable to the traditional recruitment of high school athletes.

Outlook for the Program

Despite the challenges faced in 2024, analysts like ESPN’s David Hale remain optimistic about Florida State’s prospects for the 2025 season, predicting an increase of eight wins. The foundation laid by Norvell’s recent hires and strategic recruiting efforts holds promise for the team’s revival in the coming year.

The journey ahead is critical for Florida State football, as Coach Norvell aims to restore the program’s prominence and rekindle the competitive spirit that characterized earlier successful seasons. With an eye on the future, fans eagerly await the developments leading up to the 2025 season.
