Volunteers helping at a food distribution event

News Summary

Farm Share, Florida’s leading nonprofit food bank, is organizing two important drive-thru food distribution events in Tallahassee on June 26 and June 28. These events aim to combat food insecurity by providing fresh produce and canned goods at no cost. Local volunteers will assist in loading vehicles to ensure safety while addressing the rising need for food resources during the summer months, particularly impacting families without access to school meals.

Tallahassee, FL – Farm Share, the leading nonprofit food bank in Florida, is set to host two significant drive-thru food distribution events in Tallahassee to combat food insecurity. The events will take place on June 26 at Anderson Chapel AME Church and on June 28 at Life Deliverance Ministry, both starting at 8 a.m. and continuing until supplies run out.

At these events, attendees will receive a variety of fresh produce and nonperishable canned goods at no cost. Participation is encouraged to be via vehicle to ensure safety, and local volunteers will assist in loading groceries. These distributions aim to alleviate the growing pressures faced by families during the hurricane season and the summer months when school meal programs are unavailable.

Farm Share is committed to addressing the rising need for food resources in the community. During the summer, there is often an increase in requests for assistance, especially when children do not have access to school meals. The nonprofit distributes food through over 20 community food distributions weekly, regularly serving Tallahassee and surrounding areas.

In addition to scheduled events, Farm Share supplies food to nearly 2,000 food pantries and feeding organizations across the state. The organization is dedicated to meeting the needs of local communities, but it faces challenges due to rising food prices, inflation, and the increased operational costs associated with transportation. Truck sponsorships for distributions can cost around $5,000, further straining resources.

Despite increasing demand, Farm Share has had to scale back on distributions due to supply shortages. The nonprofit sources food donations from local growers and grocery stores, meaning that any shortages in these areas significantly impact its ability to provide resources to those in need. Dr. Samuel Carter, a distribution coordinator for Farm Share, emphasizes the organization’s commitment to continue assisting those facing food insecurity, even amidst ongoing supply challenges.

Following a recent partnership with Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), Farm Share expanded its reach by distributing hurricane supply kits across Florida on June 7, 2025. This statewide initiative aims to supply free hurricane kits to 6,500 families and is supported by the American Red Cross and Neighbors 4 Neighbors. In response to past hurricanes, Farm Share and GEM have delivered over 13 million pounds of food, water, and emergency supplies, underscoring their ongoing commitment to community support.

As the summer months approach, the need for food distribution grows in tandem with the increasing operational costs and societal pressures placed on families. Farm Share remains devoted to its mission of fighting food insecurity in Florida and providing essential resources during times of crisis.

Residents of Tallahassee are encouraged to participate in the upcoming distribution events to help combat the pressing issue of food scarcity within their community. With ongoing support from local volunteers and various organizations, Farm Share continues to be a crucial lifeline for those in need.
