News Summary

Caleb Granger, standout pitcher for Florida A&M University, is set for elbow surgery, sidelining him for 8 to 10 months. Granger, the 2023-2024 SWAC Pitcher of the Year, has been instrumental in his team’s success but will miss crucial games as the Rattlers aim to maintain their position in the SWAC standings. His absence has been mitigated by strong performances from teammates, but FAMU faces challenges as they prepare for important matchups while honoring senior players.

Tallahassee, FL – Caleb Granger, a right-handed pitcher for Florida A&M University (FAMU), is set to undergo elbow surgery on Friday, May 2, in Gainesville. This operation will address issues with his throwing arm and is expected to keep him sidelined for an estimated 8 to 10 months, effectively cutting short his senior season.

Granger was recognized as the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Pitcher of the Year for the 2023-2024 season, becoming the only player from a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to be named on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Division I Preseason All-American list. Having played a pivotal role in FAMU’s success, Granger has been missed since his injury on April 4 during a conference series against Jackson State.

Prior to his injury, Granger compiled an impressive record with a 2.08 earned run average (ERA) and maintained a perfect 3-0 win-loss record. His absence has been felt in the Rattlers’ pitching lineup, but his teammates have risen to the occasion. Freshman Garrett Workman has stepped up as the team’s Friday starter, allowing the Rattlers to remain competitive in the conference. Despite losing their ace, FAMU currently ranks third in the SWAC for team pitching statistics.

FAMU retains a strong position in the SWAC standings, sitting in second place behind Bethune-Cookman, with a season record of 21-20 and a conference record of 15-6. The Rattlers’ resilience has been demonstrated in their recent performance, as they have won three out of their last four series without Granger on the mound.

The team is set to host Alabama A&M for a crucial three-game series from Friday, May 2, to Sunday, May 4, at Moore-Kittles Field on FAMU’s campus. This weekend’s games will also feature Senior Day celebrations, honoring the contributions of the team’s seniors, including Granger, who has played a significant role in the team’s success throughout his college career.

In the broader context, Granger’s surgery marks a challenging moment for FAMU baseball, as the team will need to find ways to compensate for the loss of their top pitcher. The injury not only impacts Granger’s final season but will also influence the team’s preparations for the future, as they look to build on their current standings and continue to develop young talent within the program.

As the Rattlers approach the end of their season, the focus will be on maintaining their competitive edge in the upcoming series against Alabama A&M, with hope for Granger’s successful recovery and eventual return to the mound as a key player for FAMU baseball.
