News Summary

Angela Suggs, the athletic director of Florida A&M University, was arrested for felony charges related to the misuse of a business credit card. Following an investigation by the FDLE, Suggs faces multiple accusations, including grand theft and filing false travel claims totaling over $24,000. The allegations emerged soon after her appointment at FAMU, and the interim president has indicated that the situation is being monitored. Suggs has been released on bail while the investigation continues.

Tallahassee, FL – Angela Suggs, the athletic director and vice president of Florida A&M University (FAMU), was arrested on felony charges related to the misuse of a business credit card on Monday, June 9, 2025. This arrest follows a months-long investigation conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).

Suggs, 55, faces multiple charges, including grand theft, scheme to defraud, and four misdemeanor counts of filing false travel claims. The case against her stems from accusations that she misused a business credit card, resulting in over $24,000 in unauthorized personal charges related to her prior role as president and CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation (FSF).

The investigation began in November 2024, shortly after Suggs was appointed as the athletic director at FAMU. The FDLE initiated the inquiry following a criminal referral from the Florida Department of Commerce’s Inspector General, which included a comprehensive audit of Suggs’ business credit card transactions and travel reimbursements.

The audit reportedly uncovered that Suggs allegedly used the FSF-issued credit card for various personal expenses, including visits to casinos during business trips. Specific allegations indicate that she made cash withdrawals, wire transfers, and personal purchases totaling over $24,000. Furthermore, she is accused of falsifying travel vouchers by coding unauthorized charges as meals.

Upon questioning about the unauthorized charges, Suggs reportedly claimed that some were related to business meals and that others were mistakenly charged to the business credit card. It is also alleged that she failed to fully reimburse the Florida Sports Foundation for her personal expenditures, further complicating her legal situation.

Following her arrest, Suggs turned herself in at the Leon County Detention Facility. Her bond was set at $13,500, and she was released from jail shortly after 2:30 PM on the same day. The FDLE has indicated that the investigation is ongoing, with more details expected to emerge as proceedings continue.

The interim president of FAMU, Timothy Beard, acknowledged the allegations against Suggs but emphasized that they are unrelated to her current position at the university. He noted that the university is monitoring the situation as it develops.

Suggs joined Florida A&M University as athletic director on October 7, 2024, after her predecessor resigned in August 2024. Before her tenure at FAMU, she led the Florida Sports Foundation, where she was involved in promoting the state’s sports industry and overseeing grant programs for various sports events.

A notable graduate of Florida A&M University, Suggs holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and a Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Thomas University. She has held multiple positions at FAMU, including serving as Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs, before ascending to her current role as athletic director.

The legal implications surrounding Suggs’ arrest are significant, as they could impact her future in college athletics and her reputation within the larger sports community. As the investigation unfolds, further developments are anticipated regarding the charges and their implications for both Suggs and Florida A&M University.
