Tallahassee, FL – Savannah Day, a respected educator and dedicated researcher with deep roots in Wilkes County, NC, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering commitment to education and community service. Born and raised in a rural area, Savannah was the only child and demonstrated remarkable determination, overcoming the limited opportunities available for women during her early years.
She graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College before embarking on a teaching career as a Home Economics instructor in middle school. Savannah’s ambition led her to further her education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, culminating in a Ph.D. in Housing from Florida State University. Her distinguished career included teaching at Virginia Tech, where she played a pivotal role in developing the Property Management program and shaped countless student lives until her retirement in 1990.
In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Savannah’s research primarily focused on improving housing solutions for vulnerable groups, including the elderly and low-income families. She collaborated with the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Tallahassee and contributed to numerous academic publications. Notably, Savannah pioneered research on Potty Parity, advocating for equitable restroom access in public spaces, showcasing her commitment to social justice and welfare.
Beyond her academic accomplishments, Savannah is fondly remembered for her passion for genealogy. She authored several books, including the definitive work on the Segraves family titled The Reverend William Segraves and His Descendants. A proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she was actively involved in her community and cherished her family ties, which she believed greatly contributed to her longevity.

The couple eloped in 1945 in Statesville, NC, during a double ceremony with friends shortly after World War II. Together, they fostered a nurturing environment built on strong family values centered around education.
