News Summary

The trial of Donna Adelson, charged with serious murder-related offenses, has been postponed due to a judge’s decision allowing her more time for defense preparation. Originally set for June 3, this marks the fourth delay linked to the 2014 murder of her ex-son-in-law, Dan Markel. The judge recognized the necessity for adequate defense, especially with new evidence emerging, including wiretap recordings. The state is reviewing new leads, while the defense faces challenges due to a high volume of materials to analyze. The next trial date remains pending amid complex legal proceedings.

Tallahassee, Florida – The trial of Donna Adelson, charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation to commit murder, has been postponed following a judge’s decision to grant her request for a continuance. The trial was originally scheduled to commence on June 3 but will now face an indefinite delay, marking the fourth postponement since the murder of her former son-in-law, Dan Markel, in 2014.

The judge emphasized the necessity of ensuring that Adelson receives an adequate opportunity to investigate and prepare her defense, particularly in light of new evidence that has emerged. Court documents reveal that Adelson has shown “good cause” for her request to delay the trial, and during a recent hearing, the state revealed they are reviewing a new lead stemming from their investigation last fall. This new inquiry has generated additional material, including recorded phone conversations that are now part of the evidence.

According to reports, the state possesses over 30 recorded conversations from wiretaps but intends to present only one or two during the trial. The defense has expressed concerns regarding the time available to review these new materials, noting they have not yet been able to analyze even two hours of the wiretap recordings. They argue that the two-month window provided is insufficient given the volume of new information presented.

The legal proceedings stem from the July 2014 murder of Dan Markel, a law professor at Florida State University, who was shot and killed in his garage amid a contentious custody dispute with his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, Donna’s daughter. The motive for the alleged crimes is believed to include Donna’s wish for Wendi and her grandchildren to move to South Florida, away from Markel.

Remarkably, Charlie Adelson, Donna’s son, was convicted last year for his involvement in the murder-for-hire plot and is currently serving a life sentence. Legal maneuvers in this case have been notable, including a recent motion to disqualify the presiding judge, which has been denied. Additionally, the case has drawn attention for potential allegations of witness tampering or obstruction, prompting the state to reopen certain inquiries into the incident.

While the judge has not yet set a new trial date, the court cautioned that this would be the final continuance unless further “good cause” is presented. The state has acknowledged that it will not face any prejudice due to this delay and has supported the need for the defense to adequately prepare in light of the newly surfaced evidence.

The defense team is also busy sifting through over 100,000 emails related to the case that have been received recently, which adds further complexity to their preparation. Furthermore, the judge has ordered the partial unsealing of certain motions linked to the case to assist the defense, although many documents remain sealed.

This case continues to unfold in a way that highlights the intricate legal and emotional entanglements surrounding the murder of Dan Markel, setting the stage for further developments as both sides prepare for what is expected to be a pivotal trial in the fight for justice.
