The upcoming ceremony aims to inspire future generations and reinforce community engagement and educational partnerships.
The Best & Brightest Awards program, which honors notable academic achievements and community service among high school seniors in Leon County, will celebrate its 20th anniversary on May 14. Founded by Ron Sachs in 2006, the initiative has recognized numerous students for their outstanding contributions, providing scholarships that reach up to $1,500 each, alongside trophies and lasting recognition.
Over the years, the awards program has celebrated the achievements of 134 high school seniors in its latest iteration, demonstrating a legacy of excellence and commitment to community service. Participants are evaluated across multiple categories, with varying scholarship amounts based on their accomplishments. A standout accolade, the Spirit of the Best & Brightest Award, honors one exceptional student who exemplifies civic duty, accompanied by a scholarship of $2,500.
Ron Sachs, a native of Miami, was inspired by his own community’s appreciation for young achievers, which motivated him to create an avenue for recognizing student talent in Leon County. With over two decades of experience in public relations, including roles at the Miami Herald and as a press executive for the governors of Florida, Sachs established the Best & Brightest Awards to spotlight students who excel academically while also supporting their communities. The program has since distributed nearly $900,000 in scholarships, reflecting its dedication to fostering local talent.
Among the alumni of the Best & Brightest program are individuals who have gone on to achieve remarkable successes in their respective fields. Ashley Williams, a former winner, serves as a senior advisor to former President Joe Biden and is launching her consulting firm, demonstrating the program’s impact on future leaders. Another notable alum, Kristen Ledlow, began her career as a sports correspondent for NBA TV and now operates a kickboxing gym and a children’s clothing brand, illustrating the diverse paths that winners can take. Mike Jones, recognized for his leadership, has made significant contributions as a research assistant professor in economics in Anchorage, Alaska, and Denise Frohlich, an athletic runner-up, has established herself as a neonatologist, emphasizing the exemplary careers fostered through this initiative.
The upcoming awards ceremony not only highlights the achievements of high school students but also aims to inspire upcoming generations. Recent efforts have been made to enhance community engagement through the advisory board of the Foundation for Leon County Schools, which is now inclusive of experts from various sectors. This collaboration aims to support Lively Technical College and strengthen partnerships with Tallahassee State College, reinforcing the importance of education within the community.
In conclusion, the Best & Brightest Awards program stands as a testament to the values of academic excellence and selfless service, showcasing the talents of Leon County’s youth and celebrating their contributions while encouraging a bright future for all.
