Tallahassee Set to Welcome Musical Sensation Anoushka Shankar

Get ready, music lovers of Tallahassee! The enchanting sitar player and composer, Anoushka Shankar, is about to make her debut at the highly anticipated Opening Nights event. Scheduled for March 23, 2025, this extraordinary concert will take place at the marvelous Ruby Diamond Concert Hall. It promises an unforgettable evening filled with Shankar’s latest melodies as well as some of her beloved classics.

A Journey Through Shadows and Light

For Shankar, the past few years have been anything but easy. Like many talented artists, the COVID pandemic brought feelings of isolation, uncertainty, and anxiety for the future. Now at the age of 43, she found herself seeking an outlet for those vulnerable emotions, which sparked a creative burst that led to the crafting of three unique mini-albums. The final installment, entitled “Chapter III: We Return to Light,” was recently unleashed to the world.

A Sitar Prodigy from a Young Age

Anoushka’s musical journey began when she picked up the sitar at the tender age of seven. Starting with the basics, she was fortunate to learn from a dedicated teacher before advancing her skills under the guidance of none other than her legendary father, Ravi Shankar. Ravi is a cultural icon, best known for bringing Indian classical music to the Western world and for his famous friendship with George Harrison from The Beatles. George was such an integral part of the Shankar family that Anoushka fondly refers to him as “uncle,” recalling festive family gatherings where he was present.

Musical Family Ties

The musical lineage doesn’t stop there. Shankar has connections to other prominent figures in music, like American composer Philip Glass and celebrated violinist Yehudi Menuhin. At just 13 years old, Anoushka took to the stage for the first time during her father’s tribute concert, celebrating Ravi’s 75th birthday. Her debut signaled the start of a remarkable career that has seen her release her first solo album in the fall of 1998.

A Versatile Artist

Throughout her career, Anoushka Shankar has embraced a myriad of musical styles. From the elegant notes of classical sitar to the energetic beats of trance and fusion, she has collaborated with an eclectic mix of artists, including Sting, Thievery Corporation, and Lenny Kravitz. Her versatility has allowed her to carve out a niche that is uniquely her own.

Family Connections and Awards

In addition to her musical prowess, Shankar shares a special bond with her half-sister, Norah Jones. Both daughters of Ravi Shankar but raised by different mothers, the two have frequently collaborated on musical projects. While Norah boasts an impressive 10 Grammy Awards, Anoushka has been nominated 11 times without a win. She humorously views her status among Grammy-less artists and feels quite at home, sharing this camaraderie with her fellow musicians.

Grab Your Tickets!

This is one concert you won’t want to miss! Tickets are available, ranging from $65 to $85, and can be purchased through the Opening Nights website or by calling 850-644-7670. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of Anoushka or new to her music, this event at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall will surely be a night filled with inspiration and breathtaking artistry.
