TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida A&M lost for the third week in a row on Saturday, falling 42-14 to Southern at Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee in a Halloween meeting of longtime SWAC rivals.
The result ended a six-game Rattlers winning streak in the series and gave the Jaguars their first win at Bragg in 25 years. FAMU had not lost to Southern since the 2012 Atlanta Football Classic.
Southern running back Trey Holly, the conference rushing leader, carried 25 times for 206 yards and two scores. His longest was a 65-yard touchdown run that came right after FAMU got on the board in the second quarter.
The game got away from the Rattlers when Southern defender Michael Williams II stepped in front of an Armond Parker throw and ran it back 98 yards for a touchdown, making it 35-7. Williams intercepted Parker twice on the day. Southern quarterback Christian Johnson needed only nine throws, hitting seven for 112 yards and a touchdown.
Parker finished 18 of 31 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns. The Rattlers trailed 35-14 at the half and did not score after the break, while Southern ran for 311 of its 423 yards and kept the ball for 36 minutes, 48 seconds.
Before kickoff, FAMU coach Quinn Gray wore a Perry Street Strong hoodie for the 12 people hurt in the shooting outside the stadium after last week’s homecoming game. Players wore No. 33 helmet stickers in memory of Tony Barber, a former Rattlers running back enshrined in the school’s sports Hall of Fame, who died this week.
FAMU drops to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the SWAC, and Southern is 4-5 and 2-3. The Rattlers play next at Alcorn State on Nov. 7.
