TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State made a late push on Halloween night at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, but four turnovers were too much to overcome as Clemson beat the Seminoles 36-24 on Saturday, handing Mike Norvell and his team a third loss in a row.
Quarterback Ashton Daniels was intercepted three times and also lost a fumble, while Clemson did not give the ball away. Elliot Washington II had two of the picks, including a goal-line pick with 1:03 to play that ended the last Seminoles drive.
Daniels still threw for 350 yards on 21-of-33 passing. He hit Micahi Danzy for a 46-yard score in the first quarter, ran one in from 13 yards out and found Jasen Lopez on a 41-yard touchdown that pulled Florida State within 29-24 with 5:30 left.
Clemson answered right away. Facing third-and-12 from its own 21, freshman Tait Reynolds broke a 79-yard touchdown run with 3:17 remaining, a Clemson record for a quarterback run. Reynolds also threw scoring passes to Christian Bentancur and Olsen Patt-Henry and finished 18 of 32 for 189 yards.
Kicker Nolan Hauser made five field goals for the Tigers, including a 50-yarder as time ran out in the second quarter that sent Clemson to the locker room up 23-10.
The Seminoles ground game went nowhere without leading rusher Ousmane Kromah, who sat out. Florida State finished with 65 rushing yards on 29 carries.
Clemson left guard Elyjah Thurmon was strapped to a backboard and carted off in the second quarter, and Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said the lineman was expected to stay overnight at a Tallahassee hospital.
The Tigers are now 5-3, with a 3-2 ACC mark. The Seminoles sit at 3-5 overall and 1-4 in league play, and are 1-5 against Power 4 opponents. The Seminoles travel to play Boston College on Saturday.
