TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Twelve people were hurt, 11 of them by gunfire, when shots broke out near Bragg Stadium on the Florida A&M University side of Tallahassee shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday, as homecoming weekend crowds filled the area.
Half of the victims are juveniles, and the youngest is 11 years old, Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell told reporters at a briefing held after midnight. Three people suffered serious wounds and one of them was in critical condition. The remaining eight were listed as stable. One victim is believed to be a FAMU student, and the twelfth person was hurt while running away from the gunfire.
The shooting happened near the corner of Perry and Manatee streets. Early findings point to a physical fight between people just before shots were fired, and Revell described it as an isolated incident. He said no one has been arrested and investigators do not yet have a person of interest.
Revell said about two dozen officers were already nearby when the shooting started, with the full department working the busy homecoming weekend. He said some officers carried wounded people in their arms because vehicles could not get through the crowd, and he urged people to clear the area in situations like this so help can reach victims.
Tallahassee police investigators are working to learn what led to the gunfire and who pulled the triggers. FAMU said its campus remained safe and asked anyone who knows something to contact city police. Florida State University told students and staff to stay indoors as a precaution and said there was no sign anyone from its community was involved.
Tips can go to city police at 850-891-4200. People who want to stay anonymous can reach Crime Solvers at 850-574-TIPS instead. The investigation remains active, and police said early details could change as it moves forward.
