TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State has lost its leading rusher for the rest of the season. Sophomore running back Ousmane Kromah had surgery on his left ankle after he was hurt in Saturday night’s double-overtime loss at Miami, and he came back to Tallahassee on Sunday, the school said.
The injury came late in the second quarter at Hard Rock Stadium, on a hard run that ended near the Miami end zone. Kromah attempted to make it to the sideline hopping on his good leg, but he went down before he got there. Medical staff put an air cast on the leg, and he left the game on a cart. He had 14 carries for 44 yards at that point.
The bones that join his foot and ankle were both fractured and dislocated, and the repair required surgery.
Kromah had been one of the bright spots of a tough year. He goes out with 609 rushing yards, which ranks 20th in the nation, plus five rushing touchdowns and 11 catches for 97 yards. As a freshman last season he ran for 408 yards.
Speaking once the 43-35 defeat was over, Norvell, the Seminoles’ head coach, said he went onto the field to settle Kromah down and told the sophomore to focus on him, assuring him things would turn out all right. Norvell called him a tough competitor.
Quintrevion Wisner took over as the main ball carrier once Kromah was hurt, and the Seminoles scored four of their five touchdowns after he left. Amari Thomas, Zay Parks and Gavin Markey are the other healthy backs on the roster.
The Seminoles are 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. They have an open date this coming weekend, and Clemson visits Tallahassee on Oct. 31.
