Tallahassee, Florida – The Florida State University School of Theatre is set to present a radical reimagining of classic literature with the upcoming production titled “You on the Moors Now.” Directed by Jasmine Bracey, an Assistant Professor at the School, the play features four notable female characters who take control of their narratives with a modern perspective. The performances are scheduled for October 31 through November 9 at 8 p.m., with matinee shows at 2 p.m.

Bracey is passionate about storytelling, infused with a lifelong love for performance. Her journey began as early as three years old, participating in various performance arts, including gymnastics, dance, and talent shows. A defining moment for her occurred at the age of eight, when she attended a touring production of “Cats” while living in Korea, which sparked her enthusiasm for theater. Despite initial career preferences from her mother, Bracey pursued a college degree in Theatre at FSU, where she later became an influential faculty member.

The play draws thematic elements from beloved classics such as “Pride and Prejudice,” “Wuthering Heights,” “Jane Eyre,” and “Little Women.” Bracey first encountered these stories primarily through visual formats, such as films, rather than through traditional coursework. Her study abroad experience in London, where she attended a play centered on the Brontë sisters, further deepened her connection with these classic tales. She considers the narratives included in “You on the Moors Now” to possess a timeless quality, transcending both historical and cultural barriers.

The production aims to retain the core essence of the original stories while offering a contemporary twist that empowers the characters involved. Bracey has emphasized the importance of collaborative environments in theater productions, drawing inspiration from Eric Ting, a former Artistic Director of California Shakespeare. She fosters a sense of ownership among actors regarding their performance, encouraging them to contribute actively to the storytelling process.

Thematically, “You on the Moors Now” addresses issues of identity, societal roles, and the expectations surrounding personal relationships. It poses significant questions about authenticity and societal pressures, reflecting the complexities of modern life while staying rooted in the beloved classics of literature.

The venue for the performances is located at 502 S Copeland Street, The Lab Building A (TLA), on the FSU campus. Ticket prices range from $10 to $30, with discount options available to increase accessibility for diverse audiences. The production of “You on the Moors Now” is part of a larger season curated by the School of Theatre, which includes various plays such as “Sweeney Todd,” “Footloose,” “Junie B. Jones,” and “The Play That Goes Wrong.” Each of these plays explores themes of identity and reality in contemporary contexts.

Aaron C. Thomas, the Director of the School’s BA program, indicated that the season is thoughtfully designed to balance the educational needs of students with the preferences of the audience, aiming to create performances that resonate with both participants and viewers alike.
