TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – Former Leon County Commissioner Bruce J. Host passed away on September 26, 2025, at the age of 86. His death marks the loss of a notable community leader who dedicated much of his life to public service. Host is remembered for his influential role in local government and his tireless advocacy for veterans’ affairs.
Bruce Host served as the County Commissioner for District 4 from 1992 to 2000 and was elected chair of the County Commission from 1995 to 1996. During his tenure, he made significant contributions, particularly in the areas of community infrastructure and historical preservation. One of his lasting legacies is the establishment of the Northeast Branch Library, which was dedicated in his honor on November 22, 2023. Additionally, he played a vital role in the protection and preservation of the historic Bradfordville School House and advocated for the construction of a full-service fire station at the intersection of Bull Headley and Bannerman roads. He also supported critical transportation improvements along Thomasville Road.
Host’s extensive background began well before his political career. Born in 1939 in Ashland, Kentucky, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and received various accolades in the Boy Scouts, including the God and Country Award and induction into the Order of the Arrow. His leadership skills developed early on as he served as commander of the Army Junior ROTC battalion in high school.
After graduating, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1958, serving a distinguished 22-year career that included participation in the Vietnam War. Host attended the Naval War College in Rhode Island and earned a master’s degree from George Washington University. His remarkable military service concluded in 1981, during which he was awarded several honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. Following his retirement, he took an active role in his local community in Tallahassee and participated in various homeowner associations.
Frustrated by inaction from local government in addressing community issues, Host decided to run for county commissioner. His tenure was characterized by a commitment to respectful treatment of others and a dedication to serving the community. After leaving office, Host remained engaged in local issues and continued to advocate for veteran recognition and support.
In 2021, Bruce Host was appointed as Florida State Director for the Selective Service System and founded the Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame Society, underlining his ongoing commitment to veterans and their families. His work in this area solidified his role as a champion for veterans’ rights and support services in Florida.
Following his passing, Leon County Commissioner Rick Minor expressed condolences on social media, indicating that the county would lower its flags to half-staff for ten days in honor of Host’s contributions to the community. Bruce Host’s legacy encompasses important community projects and a profound commitment to veterans’ affairs, cementing his status as a respected figure in both local governance and military circles.
