TALLAHASSEE, FL – First Commerce Credit Union and the Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare Foundation are set to launch the sixth annual #FlamingoChallenge, an initiative dedicated to raising funds for local breast cancer patients. This campaign, which has successfully raised over $400,000 for the Walker Breast Program since its inception, seeks to alleviate financial burdens faced by those undergoing breast cancer treatment.
Funds raised through the #FlamingoChallenge will be directed towards covering essential medical and non-medical expenses for patients. This includes life-saving imaging services for uninsured individuals and travel and lodging expenses for those who are too ill to return home after treatment. Over the years, the #FlamingoChallenge has gathered more than $500,000 to support breast cancer patients in North Florida and South Georgia.
A kickoff event is scheduled for Tuesday, September 30th, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Amicus Brewing Ventures, located off Gadsden Street. Participants in the challenge will have the opportunity to “adopt” flamingos, which can be displayed in their yards or storefronts throughout October. Supporters are encouraged to contribute by sharing photos on social media using the hashtag #FlamingoChallenge, tagging both First Commerce and the TMH Foundation.
New Mascot and Community Engagement
This year’s campaign features a new mascot, Franny the Flamingo, which is aimed at bringing fresh energy and a spirit of survivorship to the challenge. Local organizations are invited to enhance their fundraising efforts through various initiatives such as contests, raffles, or pledging a portion of their proceeds to the cause.
Community support through the #FlamingoChallenge has demonstrated a direct positive impact on patient care. The Walker Breast Program has expanded to include a new multidisciplinary Breast Clinic designed to streamline multiple patient appointments into a single visit, thereby providing faster and more efficient treatment to patients.
Historical Impact and Future Aspirations
Since its launch in 2020, the #FlamingoChallenge has seen significant participation, with more than 100 businesses, agencies, schools, and organizations contributing toward fundraising goals. In its inaugural year, it successfully raised over $40,000 that directly benefited the Walker Breast Program.
Every contribution made through the #FlamingoChallenge remains local, directly supporting patients battling breast cancer. The TMH Foundation and First Commerce Credit Union have set aside October 22 as #PinkPower Day, inviting community members to show support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The #FlamingoChallenge will also be featured at the Bannerman Crossing’s Northtown Get Down event on the same day.
Those interested in participating are encouraged to learn more or sign up for the challenge by visiting TMH.ORG/PinkPower or contacting First Commerce via email or phone. Promoting awareness for annual mammograms is a key priority of the campaign, emphasizing the importance of early detection in saving lives.
This year’s #FlamingoChallenge promises to build upon its past successes, rallying the community to support those impacted by breast cancer and remind everyone about the critical need for accessible care.
