Tallahassee – George E. Lewis II, a respected attorney and conservation advocate from Tallahassee, passed away at the age of 83 on July 25 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. Known affectionately to family as “George Edward,” he was recognized for his dedication to law, the arts, and environmental preservation.

George Edward Lewis II was a prominent member of the Lewis banking family, which has deep roots in the Tallahassee community dating back to 1856 with the establishment of Lewis State Bank. He graduated with a Jurisprudence degree from the University of Virginia and initially began his professional career in banking. However, he later transitioned to law, opening his own practice in downtown Tallahassee, located in a home that had belonged to his grandmother. His legal specialization focused on wills, trusts, and estates, and he remained active in his practice until health issues impeded his work in the final year of his life.

Throughout his time in office, George Edward became a familiar figure in the community, often spotted walking to the Lively Café within St. John’s Episcopal Church for lunch. A devoted member of St. John’s, he was baptized, confirmed, and married there, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to his faith. His engagement with the arts was evident through his support for local initiatives, remembered fondly by former Executive Directors of LeMoyne Arts for his gentle conversations and encouragement.

Lewis’s mother, Clifton Lewis, was known for her dynamic spirit and co-founded the LeMoyne Gallery, while also being active during the Civil Rights Movement. Under her influence, George developed a strong appreciation for social causes and cultural heritage. Clifton commissioned renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design Spring House, which stands as the only Wright-designed residence in Florida and has become significant to the Lewis family’s legacy.

Community members describe George Edward Lewis II as sweet, quiet, and kind. He was recognized for his meticulous approach to law and his calm demeanor, with occasional witty humor which caught people by surprise. He upheld the values instilled by his family, which were revered in the Tallahassee community.

In addition to his professional contributions, Lewis was passionate about environmental conservation, chiefly concerning Lake Jackson. In recognition of his efforts, he received the “Watershed Champion” award in 2007. His commitment extended to serving as legal counsel for Friends of Lake Jackson, affirming his deep connection to local ecology and the family history tied to locations like St. Teresa Beach and Dog Island.

Music, particularly the works of Bach, was another key aspect of his life that brought him joy. His storytelling and nurturing spirit left an enduring mark on his family, especially on his children and grandchildren, creating cherished memories and connections. Friends noted that he had a unique ability to share love and wisdom through stories, making him a beloved figure among his family and peers.

A memorial service to honor George E. Lewis II is scheduled for 3 p.m. on September 5 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, followed by a reception. The community will gather to celebrate his life, contributions, and the enduring legacy he leaves behind.
