Tallahassee Community Remembers Educator and Advocate Dorothy Marie Nelson Binger
TALLAHASSEE, FL
Community members in Tallahassee are coming together to honor the life of Dorothy Marie Nelson Binger, affectionately known as Dot, who passed away on December 3, 2024, at the age of 100. A public visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, December 10, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, located at 700 Timberlane Road. The funeral service will take place on Wednesday, December 11, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church at 120 Park Avenue, with family cemetery services planned for a later date.
A Legacy of Education and Service
Born on a farm near Bushnell, Florida, Dot was the eighth of nine children in her family. She completed her elementary education in Bushnell, later earning her degree from the Florida State College for Women in 1946 and her master’s degree from Florida State University in 1949. Her career spanned decades in education, during which she taught at various institutions including Auburn University, Florida State University, and Pensacola Junior College.
Dot’s journey took a personal turn during World War II when she married Robert D. Binger in 1944 while he served in the United States Navy. While Bob was deployed, Dot continued her studies and worked in naval offices. She became a dedicated mother to their children, Norma and Greg, while juggling her teaching responsibilities following Bob’s passing in 1968.
Community Impact
Throughout her life, Dot was deeply involved in her community. After her retirement from Tallahassee Community College in 1991, where she served as the Director of Applied Sciences, she shifted her focus to volunteer work. For over 40 years, she dedicated her time to Envision Credit Union, serving on the board. She also supported the PACE Center for Girls as a founding board member.
Remarkably, Dot was a passionate advocate for children, serving as a Guardian ad Litem in the Second Judicial Circuit for 35 years, representing the interests of over 90 children in foster care.
Fond Memories from Family
Dot’s family remembers her brightly. Her grandsons, Gideon and Solomon Garland, reflected that she was always interested in their school activities. Her granddaughter, Tara Parrish Garland, shared, “I could talk to Grandma about anything.” Family gatherings, especially during Advent services at her home, stand out in fond memory for her grandson, Tommy Parrish.
