GADSDEN COUNTY, Fla. — A 25-year-old woman from Havana died early Sunday when an SUV heading the wrong way on U.S. 27 slammed into hers head-on in Gadsden County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers put the time of the crash at 2:54 a.m. on Nov. 1. It happened where River Bluff Drive meets U.S. 27, the road also called the Florida-Georgia Highway, near Shady Rest Road north of Tallahassee.

According to the patrol, a 37-year-old man from Tallahassee was driving his SUV south while in the inside northbound lane. The Havana woman was headed north in that same inside lane, and the two vehicles met front to front in the northbound lanes.

She was pronounced dead where the crash happened. Her passenger, another 25-year-old Havana woman, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The wrong-way driver was hurt less badly, with injuries the patrol listed as minor. Troopers said all three people had their seat belts on.

Both northbound lanes of the highway were shut down while crews worked the scene. Troopers had help at the crash site from the county sheriff’s office, county EMS crews and Gadsden County Fire Rescue.

The patrol said the victim’s next of kin had been notified. No charges were announced, and the Florida Highway Patrol said its investigation into how the SUV ended up going the wrong way is still open.

Early reports from the scene had listed two people as seriously hurt, one in each SUV. The patrol’s preliminary findings later put the Tallahassee driver’s injuries at minor, leaving the passenger as the only other person with serious injuries.
