WOODVILLE, Fla. — Drivers heading through Woodville south of Tallahassee now pass under a new traffic signal at Woodville Highway and Natural Bridge Road, the busy crossing beside Woodville K-8 School.

State transportation officials expect the signal to be switched fully on before October ends. The light is the first visible piece of a safety plan for the intersection that also calls for a crosswalk signal for students and a dedicated left-turn lane for northbound traffic.

The work is backed by a $1.5 million investment announced in June. Leon County Commissioner Christian Caban, who has pressed for the changes, called the signal long overdue and credited neighbors who first raised concerns about the corner.

Those concerns led the county commission to request a state traffic study. That FDOT review, released in early 2025, found more crashes than normal at the intersection and at least three wrecks over five years that sent drivers to the hospital. It also flagged backups during school drop-off and pickup times.

The project had first been penciled in for 2028. Caban said meetings with the state transportation agency helped pull the schedule forward to 2026, and the county had floated paying for the light up front and seeking repayment from the state later to speed things along.

Woodville K-8 sits right next to the intersection, so the crosswalk signal is aimed at the children and families who cross there on foot each school day, while the turn lane is meant to ease the line of cars that forms at the start and end of classes.
